Bike SHOP hit by truck

Discussion threads about bicyclists run over by cars are a dime a dozen. Here's a new variation: a drunk driver hit a whole BIKE SHOP with his truck and damaged several bikes.

Here's the news story --

Wow. I was going to tell you about a compact car being driven through the wall of my favorite LBS a year or so ago. Didn't think it would garner much interest here though since it wasn't one of those hated and vilified SUV.

That settles it, we are all riding car magnets around, and all this time I thought it was a reflection on drivers.

Yeah he was drunk. Anybody sober would have been loading that truck up with sweet bikes.

I'm surprised no one has asked two important questions:
1. Was the bike shop operated in a "vehicular" manner?
2. Was there a bike lane in front of the the shop? Did the truck cross the bike lane? Did the presence or absence of the bike lane contribute to the accident?

After all, it's from real-world accidents that we gather the facts that inform our debates...

3. Was there a helmet in place on the roof of the bike shop at the time of the incident?

Sure sounds like a stupid driver, tho. Kinda sad if you think such a story would require an SUV to garner any interest to the people here.

Sorry 'bout ur fave LBS, tho.

If that damn bike shop had just stayed on the SIDEWALK where it BELONGED, none of this would have happened!

Your statements clearly betray your prejudices. It's obvious from the facts that the bikeshop would have avoided the collision had it claimed the lane. Also, was the bikeshop equipped with a rear-view mirror?

"The other night I came home late, and tried to unlock my house with my car keys. I started the house up. So, I drove it around for a while. I was speeding, and a cop pulled me over. He asked where I lived. I said, "Right here, officer."" - steven wright

Don't feel too bad for the bike shop, at least it wasn't a rare ceramics shop.

peace,
sam

Are you sure? There might have been some Mavic ceramic coated rims in there.

5) Did the bike shop have appropriate reflectors as required by law?

6) If after dark, was the bike shop displaying lights as required?

This sounds like it may be fodder for Jeff Fxworthy: If your truck hits a bike and the bike is still in the bike shop...

Did the shop previously restrict the SUVs path down the road, leaving this a classic case of off-road rage?
