Wait. You spend $7k on an ultralight crabon bike and you put on CrMo pedals? Where's the Titanium?!?

I think you just lost your membership with that faux pas.

I'm going with these pedals because they are a departure from what I've been using since 1986 which is Look. I may not like them so I'm not going for the top of the line model just yet. The color is a perfect match for the bike though. I'm pretty quick for an old man and I can stay in the peloton with riders much younger but shaving a few grams off the pedal weight is not that important to me at this point.

My formula for buying stuff goes something like this.....what I want costs (X) dollars. Do I have X dollars to spend on said item? Yes=buy. No= don't buy.

I think we all agree that that is a good formula. My decision to go for it with this bike is more complex than many realize. When I was in the hospital waiting to see if my head injury was going to kill me I did some soul searching. I did not like being in the hospital at all. I decided that I would rather die on the side of the road with the crows eating my innards than expire in a hospital full of tubes and needles. When I was a long distance runner and racer I loved running but when I got on a nice bike for the first time I really loved cycling especially the aspects of cycling that require strategy and teamwork, something that never materialized in my running days. The bicycle may be the most perfect invention humanity has given to other humans. I'm healthy, I have the money now that the kids are middle aged. I'm doing it now because now is the time to do it.

That's not quite a fair comparison. Lots of people own a $400K boat. That's like a second or vacation house with 30 year financing and little down. A $350 million yacht is just for the extremely wealthy.

The yacht owners pay cash. They know that it's silly making payments on a depreciating asset. That's why they're wealthy.

You'd be surprised at how heavily mortgaged or partnered some of those big boats are.

Years ago my mother briefly worked for an interior decorator in southern CA. They dealt with all kinds of people, from average schmoes, to big celebrities.

My mother was amused by the fact, that it was almost always the celebrities who didn't pay their bills; and were the ones they had to go after, and would have a hard time collecting from. Sammy Davis Jr. was one of them.

I've just kept reading to find out what kind of lock he bought.

Having been bike-jacked, I never buy a bike I cannot afford to lose.

What is this 1995? Or are you over 65 y/o and conservative? Im not drinking and riding. Smoking marajuana does not impact my ability to ride a bike.

Start thinking about investing in your own island because more and more states are becoming legalized and just imagine how many people will drive cars and ride bikes while being high going down your street. What a tragedy!

Tragedy is that people like you don't understand what's going on...not to mention it's NOT legal to be high and drive your car...Please...save your face, and God save America....and this from an atheist...

I'm a cycling enthusiast and I can't understand spending $7K on a bike either - at least for someone who's not racing competitively. I own and actually ride 4 bikes which, together, cost me $2K. Admittedly, they are all older bikes, and my most used ride cost me $1000 some 30 years ago - which is probably not all that far from $7K in terms of equivalent value at the time - and I did race a bit back in those days. And my newest bike was a >$3K bike when it was new in 1999. But I bought that one recently @ age 15 years, used for under $500.

But, that being said, it's certainly your money, and absolutely your prerogative to spend it as you see fit - but don't waste your time justifying what you value to others who value other things. I've spent $7K on a painting, and over $20K on fine wines, as well as over $50K on a sports car and I don't bother rationalizing those purchases to anyone else.

Its against the law to be drinking and driving. Do people still do it? Yup. Marajuana is no where near as dangerous as alcohol- you think people are going to be smoking and driving even though its against the law? YUP! And you're exactly right- God save America even though its too late. Anyway you're hilarious, and I'm just going to shut my mouth because this conversation is going to go nowhere.

You are confused.
If you ok with all this crap, it means you are either very young, no family, no kids or just careless. Being realist in this case is wrong. New laws like that are enough to make people leave USA. Remember my words - USA will be the only one country in the world which allows use of narcotics. The only good thing in this messed up situation, is that federal law still see this crap as illegal.

Notwithstanding that the entire post is nonsense, the least you could do is get your facts straight. Most of western Europe has decriminalized marijuana long ago, and a in a few countries it's been legal for years. So count me among those who'll file your words away for future reference ----in the circular file.

This is a forum, so post your opinion, but spare us your nonsense lectures.

I gather you do know what "only one" means. I stand by my OPINION that you had the facts wrong, and that the reference to people leaving the USA over the issue is likewise nonsense.

State facts or state opinions, but know the difference.

I'm a gear head mechanic. I love horsepower And going fast. Even if i have to use my own body. My boss gave me a 50cc Chinese scooter as a gift. I sold it to buy new tires for the triathlon bike. He was baffled... And my attempts to explain might have well been in Latin.

Same concept as when a was breaking bones every 6 months racing motorcycles. If i have to explain the premise, you won't understand. If you understand, i won't have to explain.
