Grand opening: Free tickets to Detroit Velodrome’s preview races Dec 9th.

If you are interested in seeing the new velodrome in mid-town Detroit, free tickets are available for the first public event in December.

Starting in January there will be monthly races with thousands of dollars in prize money to attract competitive racing talent from around the region.

for your tickets, go to: Lexus Velodrome ? Coming January 2018

Nothing explicit on that link about tickets or an event. There is a schedule but no date.

Am I the only wondering about a velodrome sponsored by a car import company in DETROIT?

Anyway, I wish them the best.

Cycling is a much bigger everything in Europe/Asia.

They (major investors) are also interested in bringing in football....errr international soccer to the Big D.

I know that.

I was simply referencing the irony. I imagine GM and UAW execs passing the track and having to see that reminder daily.

GM owns part of a bike sharing company. Not sure about the other two domestic brands.

I guess I see irony where others don't.

As far as Lexus sponsorship, I waited for someone else to comment first. Here in brand loyal auto country, most new car buyers opt for an A, X, or friends and family discount.

The metro Detroit Lexus owners/lessees are predominantly the accredited lawyers, doctors, and dentists, and an occasional real estate tycoon. These professionals are probably the same group in full kit riding their $5,000-$9,999 CF Madones and Specialized bikes, so they would likely follow competitive cycling.

You hit the nail on the head. The people who spend $5,000+ on a bike are the type of people who are attracted to a velodrome and the type of people Lexus want to attract. Besides, Lexus is using it for private events during the north american car show in a few weeks.

Yes the irony, The Lexus velodrome is visible from Ford Field, or the GM Renaissance center, and right next to the Chrysler freeway. ;-)

I have ridden it for over a month, but it opens to the public January 16th 2018.

Cost: Daily ($30), 10X Pass ($150) & Season Pass ($300. 1/16 - 8/31).
Class 101 & 201 will be required for new riders to participate in Open Riding.
Class 301 will be required to Race.

You will need a track bike or to rent one of the velodrome's bikes.

4 run/walk/skating lanes and a FITNESS station opening soon.

I should check here more often. Its a great spectator track - there is something more visceral about being inside so close to the riders and feeling the rush of wind hit you when the pace line goes by.

It will be having monthly races with very large cash purse to attract people from all over the region. There are a lot of big plans for it.

I would highly encourage people to check out the next race (not yet scheduled), especially the monthly races with the big prize money. There are some big plans for that venue (it is the fruition of life long dreams and passions for those running it). Either way, I had a blast watching the preview races.
