Madeline Island, Lake Superior
I just returned home (Madison WI) from a combined business/pleasure trip up to Bayfield. Thursday was business, stayed overnight, then for pleasure spent the next morning and early afternoon on Madeline Island. The last time I was on the island was maybe fifteen or sixteen years ago, before I was married (and subsequently divorced); I had vacationed with my girlfriend-to-be-wife. I'm happy to say after my visit today that little seems to have changed on the island. I'm grateful that it's not overrun with development that seems to befall most tourist destinations.
I took my early 80s Bianchi fixed gear conversion aboard the ferry. The weather couldn't have been better. Rode to the end of the island where the paved road ends and the remainder of the roads are dirt; I decided not to brave the dirt roads with 700c x 23 tires. On the way back, took every detour I could to explore wooded areas, beaches, lagoons.
Oh, breakfast this morning was in Bayfield at the Egg Toss. Minutes after I sat down, a large group sat at the table next to mine, and who would be among them but Russ Feingold.
Today was a terrific day.

I spent a week kayaking the Apostle Islands in July. It was a great trip, but I keep thinking that the roads up there would be great for a hill ride. The roads on the mainland, not on the islands
I hope to make another trip up there next summer and combine the kayaking with some rides.
