Hip Ride v. The Headwind. Some Ride Reports

Wonderful day to ride in SE Wisconsin today. A hammer was dropped. Roads were closed. Turns were missed. County line sprints were won uncontested. Headwind was battled. Tailwinds were welcomed. Yummy food was eaten at the General Store.

Good times. Gentlemen, place your reports, retorts, and buffoonery in this thread.

Also, I willfully and freely abdicate my title as map selector and navigational specialist. It's over.

...back to civilization now and ready to report in.

I awoke at the lake house to hear a howling wind. Oh yeah, this was gonna be fun.

Group of eight of us rolled out right on time, right after recursive dropped the ceremonial hammer to kick things off in the parking lot.

Look, anybody who shows up in Elvis glasses and a pink jersey is all right by me.

When I say nasty wind, please believe me when I tell you gusts were easily 40+...the kind of wind that can knock you around on a bike. Where were all the fat guys today? You know, the guys you can duck in behind on these windy days.

Early-on it became clear that my warning about the maps not working in that area in the past was indeed the case again. In no time there were scenes like below, as the now defunct "MapMaster" CyLowe tried mightily to keep us on course, but failed.

So I had to take the point to lead us back to an area I knew. That way, I was at least able to take up past my lake house, pointing out where the BBQ party will be next summer.

Fast group of guys too. I had my hands full on this ride, which was a great workout in the end. 39 miles through the rolling hills and howling wind...17.2 ave. in that wind felt great.

I'll tell you it was no easy task taking pictures in this wind. At least it gave me an excuse as to why I was off the back several times....taking pictures from back there, you know...

After the ride the five of us had lunch with Mrs. Hip, who had ridden there six miles in that wind to meet us.

That group of five above did an extra stint at the end. I got to ride side-by-side with recursive for a few miles, and I could almost feel some of his awesomeness rubbing off on me. It was inspirational for me, until he once again took off, planning for the 'perfect storm' as he called it. A finish that was downhill and with tailwind. I believe he spun out his compact for the first time ever!

(Oh...part of his secret to speed...take note Speedy McAwesome...coconut juice. Just sayin')

Another great BF ride for sure.

I was there! It's just too early in the off-season

You cheesers' always bragging about your hills. Saying they'd crush our flatlander soles. Yeah, we don't have much by way of undulation, but that means theres nothing stopping the wind. Today you experienced our "hills" and you cry like school girls!

It was a great time and I'm glad I escaped with my skin still intact.

So were there any of Jerry's kids there?

*wish I could have joined. Rode a short ride on the fixed gear in the morning.

Right you are Psimet. I couldn't resist the euro-look in Campagnolo script -- a classic
