Will be a buckeye at OSU this incoming fall semester/year! :thumb:
Can't wait to get into Columbus, but being from a small town/rural area, I'm guessing you can't just go riding around from road to road like I've been doing out in the country?
So, what's exactly considered "Safe" riding in Columbus?

Also, I've been looking at upgrading my old rusty Schwinn steel and have been working a lot. As far as clubs go, does belonging to a club give discounts or anything for buying a new bike at any specific store? Never quite had the chance to try any of that club stuff.

Any collegiate cyclists? OSU cycling team or anything?

I got in a fight with a car and lost.
Very sorry to hear that. 2 years ago I was hit by a car and had to take almost half a whole year off the bike. Definitely feel your pain!

Welcome! I don't have a lot of answers, but I'll try.

You can ride anywhere but restricted access highways, I believe. How safe is highly dependent on who you ask. You will see lots of cyclists all over town. You will want a good locking strategy, especially around campus. The old rusty Schwinn might be exactly what you want to use.

I ride with a group, but we aren't actually a club. OSU has a cycling team, and may also have some clubs. I'm not affiliated with OSU, so I really don't know. The Westerville Bicycle Club is very popular, and I might join it myself this year. I have no idea about discounts.

As far as bike paths, there are quite a few, and I think they're pretty nice, in general. I particularly like the Alum Creek Trail south, which was recently extended via a bridge over Route 33 to go all the way to, I believe, Pickerington Ponds Park. The Olentangy Trail goes right through campus, past the stadium, on the bank of the Olentangy River.

So, Hope I helped some. Send me a PM if you need more info and I don't respond promptly to this thread.

Nice pic. What bridge is that?

Also, who took that pic? You mean to tell me that someone else was riding with you at 19 degrees? :)

the bridge is on the Alum Creek trail north of shrock rd.

the picture was a self-portrait. i can never get anyone to go out riding with me when its that cold.

I used to live and ride in Columbus. I worked in a schwinn dealership in the south end in the early 80's. Moved to dayton. (Great bike trails there) looking forward to tosrv this week.

Going to be in Sunbury area next weekend to visit family and thinking of bringing my bike. I am a B rider, wondering if there's a group ride in the area I could join.

I realize this is a little late, but when you're in town again, you might check out the Westerville Bicycle Club. I'm not a member myself, but I know they are very active in that area.

left about 10 mins early at 3:50am, the road had about 2″ snow accumulation. 30°f w/ a steady snowfall. Ideal snowbiking. I wish I had my camera. In the aftn I rode along the OBT and rode some of the dirt trails that are now snow covered. You’d never think you were in Ohio. The bank of the Olentangy is quite a sight in winter

Just curious when the OSU team was finally "Officially formed"? When I was at OSU - left fall 1990 - we were trying to get a team started. We had a pretty decent number of us that rode regularly... Did TOSRV, A couple time trials, a few guys managed to hit a couple Crits.... I lost touch with everyone when I moved back to PA. Good to hear that the team actually became a reality.

Lots of great memories.... some of the best were 15+ bike pace lines and the weekly wednesday ride with the Franklin Bike club (If I recall the name correctly).... That ride was a real pack\peloton type experience...

Another Columbus cyclists checking in. I'm in NW Columbus, and often bike along Bethel/Henderson/Hayden Run and into Dublin for transportation. NW Columbus isn't the easiest place in the world to bike, but it can be done with some determination and common-sense.

An old thread I see. I'm in SE Columbus (suburb) and am getting back to riding after a "many" year lay off. Bike is being overhauled as I write this (74 Raleigh Competition -mint). I'm doing spinning classes to try to get my legs back. One of my sons is near Polaris and is riding a new Motobecane and looking for riding buddies. TOSRV next Spring? Maybe, but not sure it is a realistic goal, but I'll see how far I can take this.

Looking forward to TOSRV this year. Had an epic failure last year. Pooped out in Chillicothe on the return leg.
Training during the winter this year instead of laying around.

I remember having such a "failure" on what would have been a century ride when I was a young teen. Not sure how you can forget it happening, but reassess your training and make changes. My "failure" then haunts me about doing TOSRV now as an "old" guy.

Big snowstorm last night dumped 7” of heavy snow with a ¾ “ crust on top. Sandalwood was deep loose snow all the way to 161. 161 was plowed but was icy due to freezing rain after the snowfall. I left at 3:30 am. I got to work on time. 161 thru Linworth was a mess. They hadn’t plowed it yet. Riding home, 161 was plowed all the way to Forest Park. After having traffic all day, Sandalwood should be a nice frozen hardpack for tom’rw morning. Temps are supposed to be in single digits.

Newark/Granville, Oh, here.
Been riding all winter and really haven't seen many other cyclists at all.
Ohio has amazing dedicated bicycle trails.
Anyone from the Columbus area get out this way ?
I would also love to ride into Columbus via Johnstown to explore the city via bike.
Thanks,
Murphy

I will be in Worthington this Sunday-Wednesday. With meetings until the about 630. I"m debating on bringing the bike. The river trail looks inviting.

I'll kick some rust off of this thread. I'm in Powell and frequently use the Olentangy trail when I take my son to his swim practice. The trails have just expanded and offer a pretty nice ride. (Ohio Bikeways - Columbus Ohio Bike Trails). Eventually (not sure when) I'll be able to ride from Powell to Cincy on bike paths connecting to the Olentangy trail.
