Wrecked My Knee

I've been off the bike for about 2 months now. Hurt my knee (I think) jumping off a truck. Took a while to get better, but then every time I tried to excessive it would start to hurt.

Finally gave up and went in for a MRI and got the bad news. Torn meniscus, sprained ACL, and Baker's cyst (from the damage). I go to find an orthopedic surgeon today. Looks like I've missed the skiing season and am way behind on my bike fitness. :(

SUCK! Take the time to let it heal correctly. It is worth it in the end. I feel sorry for your bank account. This means you'll be buying everything you can think of to help pass the time and still feel like you are cycling.

If you need anyone to test out that new Cervelo just let me know....;)

Hey! Don't jump too fast on the surgery wagon. I have had two knee injuries and didn't go under the knife. Take it easy. Also...they take an awfully long time to heal, be patient...

when it comes to surgery I always get a second opinion. I blew my knee up 20 years ago skiing, The first doctor said I needed surgery. It was all scheduled when a friend suggested I get a second opinion. The second doctor recommended no surgery and rehab. so I got a third and he also said no surgery just rehab. It did take a long time to heal and 20 years later still no surgery or problems.

I am not saying you don't need surgery, just saying make sure!

Either way, good luck and a fast recovery

I was told that I needed surgery and opted for therapy instead. That worked for me.

Thanks guys, I'm going to be very careful. I am "highly suspicous" to say the least of the medical professions (and legal too).

Ouch! Sucks that it's kept you off the bike and the mountains. Heal fast!

And yeah, what everyone else said about second opinion -- good ideas. Be sure to follow your the orders of your PT during your recovery to a T! It'll be worth it in the long run.

By the way, even my Bakers Cyst went away on it's own. Sometimes they want to drain them.

Just make sure you have good pain relief for awhile....;):)

crappy news for sure. i have been battling a less serious injury since 12/1 that has basical stopped my normal running and trainer program.

as for second opinions, the MRI is what it is. while the person reading it may make a mistake, normally ligament tears are clear as day. surgery for this type of thing is pretty much the norm now a days.

keep us posted.

later.

Thanks everybody. I am going to the doctor for the Bulls and White Sox and to another that was former doc for the Dallas Cowboys etc. for two opinions. I happen to know Herm Schnieder (head trainer for the White Sox) and my neighbor is a foot surgeon for the Bears so they know the who's who in this world. All my sports need knees so I want the best opinions I can find. First consultation is tomorrow at 11AM.

There's a science and an art to medicine. There's nothing wrong with shopping around for medical care that matches your beliefs and lifestyle.

Heal well!

Could be a blessing in disguise however. Knee surgeries can make a huge difference. Its easier to ride when you dont have pain. If it wasnt for a knee surgery, I wouldn't have become a member of the BFNIC so there is my silver lining.

Seriously they put a silver lining in there? Sweet. I knew they were doing cool things with knee surgeries, but I had no clue.

I couldnt afford the Gold or Platinum lining on a cops salary
