Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

You do know that you are not allowed to cross at Sarnia anymore, don't you?
They used to allow bicycles on the Blue Water bridge between Port Huron and Sarnia, but they stopped that years ago. You can cross several miles south of Sarnia at Marine City, Michigan. There is a car ferry that runs between Marine City and Canada that allows bicycles. I used this ferry a couple of years ago and was able to cross with no hassles at all. Unfortunately, if you take the ferry, you have to approach Sarnia from the south. There is a massive petrochemical factory on the south side of Sarnia which makes for a rather unpleasant approach to the city, but it is a perfectly acceptable route otherwise.
I just went to google maps and typed in "Chicago to Marine City, Michigan" and then checked the "avoid freeways" box. I got a pretty good map that matched the route that I would have taken if I was going to bike that way. I might avoid highway 59 in southeast Michigan, though, as that's a pretty big road. Other than that, I think the route that came up is a winner. It has you taking US12 through Indiana and M60 across much of southwestern Michigan.
