RAIN Ride 2008 - Ride Across INdiana
July 12, 2008 - 160 miles across Indiana in 1 day.
Site - http://www.bloomingtonbicycleclub.or...rain/rain.html Reports from previous years - (someone send me a link. too lazy to look up right now. I will update this post with links) I'm starting it. Who is in? Who is out? Just checked online and they are only charging $35 this year if you register online. They don't specifically spell out if the late fee applies to online registration or just the mail in one, but to be safe I have always done the early registration. Deadline on that is rapidly approaching - June 14th. Wife and I bought a Honda Odyssey van last week primarily for events of this type. I think it's already full (aham and Voldemort). Might be able to stretch it to one more if needed. Wife and son look like they may be sagging as well.:roflmao2:....160 miles across the state at <20 mph with a 2 yr old....:twitchy: I've already booked into the Holiday Inn in Terre Haute. So what are your plans, fears, questions, etc.? |
Most importantly I will be wearing the BFNIC jersey. Don't think the shorts will make it 160 miles.

I'm still in, unless rain, snow, etc. Besides, reminding my wife I'm doing this and need to be in shape for it is probably the best excuse I have to get clearance for ongoing "training" rides between now and then. I'm bringing a tow rope to latch on to you if it gets rough, Psimet.;)
|
How's your training - I'm going to die this year. My long ride for the year is 39 miles - crap RAIN is coming fast.
|
I'm in. This will be my 4th one. It's always my favorite ride of the year, so I can't wait.
This might sound stupid, but I hope the weather is a little more challenging this year. I want to see if I can break 7 hours without a monster tailwind. |
I'm planning on it, but have not yet registered.
I'm hoping to see if it's possible to arrange transportation from the end to the start. Driving from NC, it's a good couple hours closer to the finish, not to mention dealing with a bus ride back just to redrive back east the next day. Appreciate any pointers for that - here or in a PM. Questions? Well I've read the reports, and found at least one map of the route online - is it really as flat as it looks? Any figures on total climb? I read in the reports that those with private sag get their calories privately, along with what they can pocket, and that the organized stops are pretty crowded. Are there stores and other places to refuel on the route? I'll think of others I'm sure, and I've already ridden a century this spring (though I was sucking pretty hard at every little hill toward the end). I have really wanted to try this ever since I heard of it. |
I'm in upstate NY on vacation during RAIN. Maybe next year.

I have really wanted to try this ever since I heard of it. this crowded rest stop thing gets tossed around every year. i have done the ride twice. first year we started mid pack. last year we started near the front. i have never had a problem at the stops. no waiting for food or bathrooms. in fact, last year i only stopped at the rest stops and no issues keeping fueled. its a great ride that is well organized. i enjoy it a lot. later. |

There is some rolling terrain in the western half, but cruising along with the massive peloton it's at times hard to even notice. |
It's pretty frickin flat. Technically it does roll a lot (see aham's climbing #), but you'd be hard pressed to find one spot on the entire ride that you could mention to others and say, "remember that hill near x?" and have them actually recall it.
