the Cubs

Alfonso Soriano - will he ever swing at an actual ball in the strike zone?

Mr. Lee = King of the double play.

Dempster - blah blah blah. one year of success as a starter means blah blah blah in my mind.

Panic = No. i am not 100 years old and remembering the good old days. they did exist right?

however, since i can remember i was a fan. i let it go a bit in the last couple years as i found other things to do. uh, riding my bike with the BFNIC (plug and play to keep the post in our section )

this is my team since i can remember. i was a little kid at the Peoria Civic Center getting Mark Grace's autograph. i got Ty Griffin's autograph at a Peoria Chiefs game. Dunston and the rocket arm. Jodie, Jodie Davis.......the Sarge..........the Penguin.......Sutcliffe.......you get the idea........i am 34 years old .

later.

I'm 48. This is so far and away the best Cubs team of my life it's not even a contest and that includes '69. They may win it all or not. But it's a real franchise now. No more being run as a promotional tool for newspapers or gum. The best days are ahead.

If the Cubbies don't advance, I hope Dempster is a goner. He walked 7 and of course gave up the grand slam. If he's back next year, i think he'll be back as a relief pitcher.

what was up with the crowd last nite? pretty weak sauce in my mind. not that it would have made a difference, but come on get up off your arse on those 0-2 counts.

Go Cubbies.

Dempster was 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA this year. I'm NOT a Cubs fans, but that is a fantastic year (better than a lot of club's aces!). Sure he struggled in yesterday's game, but if you really don't want a guy who gave up only 14 homers all year, threw over 200 innings, etc., send him up here. Milwaukee will take him in a heartbeat.

we can keep him if the price is right. i just think he was the wrong choice. in fact, Lou made serveral odd choices yesterday. Fuk starting and batting 2nd? leaving Dempster in their when he clearly didnt have it. anyway, hindsight is 20/20. today is a new day and i am taking two steps back away from the ledge.

only two though.

Well I am 47 and the 1984 Cubs was a better team in my opinion. Sarge Mathews Bobby Dernier, Sandburg, Ronnie Cey,Larry Bowa, Jody Davis,Keith Moreland, Leon Durham and a better pitching staff- Dennis Eckersly, Rick Sutcliff Steve Trout Lee Smith just to name the few that I can remember. I still feel the pain of the Garvey homerun and the ball going through Durhams legs in game 5. I have been a very cautious optimist until they went up 3-1 against the Marlins and then it happened again! Win or lose today, it can only end in breaking Cubs fans hearts again. I wish it were different but the grand slam last night reiterated that I am just a loser Cub fan.

My apologies.

I remember that team very fondly of course. But like so much in life the memory is sweeter than the reality. This year's Cubs are superior to '84 at just about every position. Soriano vs. Matthews? Ramirez vs. Cey? Bowa hit .223 with no homers and something like 15 RBI and at that age his fielding range wasn't even that great; compare with Theriot. Dernier had some speed but I think he barely drove in 30 runs. Soto is a better hitter and catcher than Davis. Even Sandberg: people forget that he was still a young player; his stats in '84 were not that much better than DeRosa's this year. Wood can't equal Lee Smith and this team lacks a dominant ace like Sutcliffe. But this year's bullpen is way deeper and I think that goes for the entire staff. I mean, '84 was a good ballclub and bonafide division winner. But this team, at least through the regular season, has been a title contender with no glaring weakness. Which the '84 team just wasn't.

Oh how I miss Sweet Lou here in Mariner land. Wish we still had him although he didn't handle young pitchers too well sometimes. He sure made baseball fun

Quite possibly on paper but they did not play like it tonight. At least that 84 team gave us some hope before breaking hearts. I guess I am getting jaded. I just do not care. Regular season ticket prices through the roof. No day baseball at Wrigley during the playoffs. Hopefully it warms a bit and the sun comes out so I can ride my bike.
