Leads?

I was just laid off. For those of you who know me if you have any leads on a job I'd appreciate it.

What do you do? My company still practices the dying art of American manufacturing. Not sure if we're hiring. But what's your field?

ME by education. Lean/Operations/Quality/Supply Chain-Purchasing/Engineering/Sales/Marketing in application. If it has to do with manufacturing I have direct experience in it.

Kimbercop 03-12-09 04:10 PM

Bummer man, sorry to hear about it.

cyclpsycho 03-12-09 04:30 PM

Uh Oh! Leaner. Now more time to train.

Sorry man :( If I can help, I will.

dave342 03-12-09 05:05 PM

Just a layoff?? Did they say this is only temporary??

iab 03-12-09 05:10 PM

Sorry to say nothing open at my place of work, but as soon as there is, I'll let you know. I'll keep my eyes open for freelance work too.

I don't know your situation, but don't let it get you down. I was let go in 2003, kind of a delayed reaction to the dot-bomb/9-11. I started my own consultancy (design/marketing/engineering) and did OK for 5 years. The best part of it was all of the extra time with the kids. Got a full-time job last year for the stability and my business was feeling the downturn back then.

Me, too. My school district has to lay off 22 teachers to be able to cover their losses on some investments they were counting on that just haven't paid off.

Lowest seniority goes first....I'm at the very bottom so I got notice a couple of days ago that they are not rehiring me next year.

I don't need the money...we are fine on one income (although the mad money sure is fun) but I'm sad at the prospect of not teaching Spanish. I just love it soooo much. There aren't many places I'm happier than when I'm with those kids teaching.

Maybe I'll sub next year. Wah!!!! Where is the crying emoticon?

Rob, send me your resume. I have 2 friends involved in Lean. Both are in IL. One is affliated with Caterpillar.

Too bad bike repair and upgrades won't support your family; you'd make a fortune.

For Spanish teaching you could do private lessons with kids who want to learn Spanish. I'm currently trying to pick up Spanish so I can finally talk to my mom-in-law, maybe you can teach me during one of the 200k rides :)

Since I work in the IT field I have no leads at all into the mechanical engineering field since all my clients are either financial, hospitals or trading companies.

Wow, what a bummer. You're too old for me to help you as one of my special ed students, although otherwise you might qualify. Probably a diagnosis of OCB, Obsessive Compulsive Biker;) Wait, that's most of the people on this forum:eek:

But really, hang in there. When I was sort of "shown the door" in a leave on your own or we'll help you do so approach, it forced me to look around and I ended up with an infinitely better job. Just wish I could help more than being a cheerleader for you (besides you wouldn't want to see me in my U of Illinois cheerleader skirt & sweater):roflmao2:

koop 03-12-09 11:08 PM

I'm sorry to hear it. I just got hired after a layoff myself. At least I get to work for a bike shop. May not pay the best, but I'm doing something I love. I hope whatever you find you can do something you enjoy.

Cyclist01012 03-13-09 05:08 AM

Pismet, I feel your pain. I got laid off Nov 19 2008. And at the moment the is not alot of need for manual lathe machinists in my area. Yesterday I started turning wrench at my LBS, man is this going to cut into my ride time.

hugs! That's gotta be scary, Rob. There is something even better waiting around the corner for you.

RJBTrek 03-13-09 05:56 AM

I'm sorry to hear that....it stinks. I'm not in the ME or manufacturing field but if I hear of anything, I'll shoot you a PM.

chipcom 03-13-09 06:45 AM

That sucks, buddy. I'll keep my eyes open, but not sure my eyes can see that far west.
One thing I do know, having lost my job back in October, is that even though things look really crappy, there ARE still people hiring. Polish up that base resume, then leverage it to create copies to specifically target each position you apply for.

Good luck man, I know it's cliche, but it really is true that for every door that closes, another opens.

"Fred" 03-13-09 07:04 AM

Rob, I would try to hook you up but the 7 hour commute would be the killer. I will put out some good vibes for you and wish you luck.
