I am visiting Leland MI for a wedding this summer for a couple of days. I hate to waste an opportunity to ride. Are there any shops with rentals? Can anyone suggest a route? Take the bike? thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The Leelanau peninsula is probably the best riding in Michigan. there is very low traffic, scenery that is second to none and lots of hills.

I am not sure of any rental places down there maybe someone else can chime in. You would probably have to go to Traverse City for that.

Lake Leelanaw, at least last summer, seemed very bike-oriented. I wonder if there's a rental place there?

You Could also contact the local cycling club out of Traverse City. That is there area and they are a large club that could point you in the direction for some rentals if needed. They could also probably give you some routes but Road Fan hit it on the nose with Here is the cherry capital cycling club's link

This is great stuff, thanks. I am looking into a travel case now, - seems its the pika or the trisport. not sure about putting my CF bike into a "soft" case. I am pumped now!

I contacted Cherry Capital Cycling Club last year prior to going up near Traverse. I got a really nice map along with routes for a few bucks. The guy also sent me a few phone numbers in case I was looking for a ride partner. Not sure where you are looking to ride in relation to Traverse, but I didnt find many spots up that way I didnt want to ride. The whole area is awesome for bikes. I did the Old Mission ride and it was really nice.

BRING YOUR BIKE! It is some of the most amazing biking in the area here, not very much traffic, great roads, great views. If you do a search for Traverse City on mapmyride, most of the rides head out that way. The closest shops are in Traverse City, Leeland is more of a tourist town with lots of great places to eat.

Heading down from Leeland and going around Glen Lake is a really nice ride, great views of lake michigan, and the sand dunes. Or you can head north to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula too.

The map Kimbercop mentioned is worth the money, it has all the roads in the area, and quite a few recommended routes marked on it.

I do that at least once every summer! We start at the south end by Traverse City high School, then go north on the east side of the OMP, all the way up to the lighthouse, then south along the west side, back to the high school.

Thats what I did, started at the HS and went up along the East side, and back down the west. It was a great ride and was right at about 40 miles. I was staying on Elk Lake and wanted to ride around Torch lake but didnt get the chance.

Last year there were huge crosswinds on the west side, directed east. Mrs. Road Fan might not do it anymore because of that, but I don't think they were worse than Chicago winds on the Lake Shore Path, or right at the beach on the old bridle path.

I'd like to do Torch Lake this year. My focus for the season is 100 at the One Helluva Ride near Ann Arbor, on July 12, and for me to do Torch teh last weekend in June would be right on the training target plan.

I've also gone around Crystal Lake, Glen Lake, and the small lakes southwest of Traverse City, near Interlochen (you'll need to Google it, probably).

Are you planning a Michigan trip this year? Maybe we can do Torch together.

No, no Michigan trip this year, except this Monday & Tuesday to Grand Haven to visit Grandmother. No ride time there. Love the Elk Rapids area, but my kids want fishing, and that means Northern WI or Minn. for us.

Northern WI is soooo much better and soooo much closer than the Land of 10,000 Gophers! Of course, please ignore our new, less-than-original marketing slogan and just zoom up I-39 to God's country. Try Plum Lake near Sayner - I caught my first fish there in 1962. Happy fishing! An added plus is the paved bike trail linking Boulder Juntion to Sayner, ~50 miles RT. Happy biking!
