Sounds like it would be a great time for a good cause. I live in the Detroit-Metro area so if I can get the day off work, which is a big IF , I wouldn't mind attending something like that at all. If you remember, try and post when they have an actual schedule of events posted.

We want to have any impact on public transportation policy, this is the kind of thing we should consider in order to have our voices heard. It would be best if such sessions were held on Saturdays.

Hi!

My ears are perked up and I am listening. I just feel hyper and am having a hard time focusing but I don't want to forget to post in here at another time but I will be paying attention to this and will try to figure out the logistics if I were able to make it (which I may be able to if there isn't a major conflict in my schedule). Just respond and PM me to respond.

I think that riding my bike most of the way there would be a great and perhaps I could drive my car to my Aunt's house that is almost directly west of my house by about 20 miles and bike the rest of the way to Lansing (still an 80+ mile ride).

Remember, this is Detroit though and for me--transporting a long distance with efficiency but just as important, SAFETY (rather than just exercising on a semi-busy road that I choose the route) is new for me. That doesn't mean I am not in favor of more bike safety though--maybe more people would be inclined to bike if they felt safer.

I am also curious though: What are some of your tangible and specific goals to arise out of this? Any other goals of people you've talked to or have otherwise been stated. I have to believe that at this point in time, bikes are not the major concern for this state and I'm not sure how much money they'd be willing to spend for anything but I could be wrong. I just want to know what is desired but also feasible to accomplish.

For me personally, two major and rudimentary goals would be concerning the roads.

What would I like? First and foremost--the fact that motorists are aware of the fact that bikes are considered vehicles and legally allowed to ride in the street (I did not know this before I began riding my bike again two years ago). Bike advocacy week that pubicizes this fact may help accomplish this--every motorist should be aware of this fact and it is unacceptable--I know as I've mentioned in the past on here, that it was mentioned in my driver's ed. manual but I don't remember that really being stressed.

Secondly, the wider roads and/or other features (like nice wide shoulders).

I really don't know how feasible it is to have bike lanes but that is where I think a ground up approach would work best and have them implemented in certain areas. In a bigger city, it would be ideal to get a feel for how many people bike, what the most traveled areas/roads are and go from there in looking at prospective places to place lanes for bikes. Where are some areas where such lanes have been implemented?
