Waterford Rides
2 Waterford factory rides left this year.

count me in for Saturday. I had to bail on RAIN, but this is close enough and short enough that I can do it without much of a hassle

Very tempting, but my son will be competing in the Racine triathalon that day, so I need to skip as I cheer him on.

New in 1972, I had the bike rebuild and repainted at the Chicago factory in 1983. It has been lightly used since. I'm the original owner.
At the age of 15, I graduated from cutting lawns to start my first real job at George Garner Cyclery in Northbrook, IL. George Garner Cyclery was a performance oriented shop with a large volume of racing bikes sold. Northbrook has a Velodrome. A wide range of competition fixies, road bikes and touring bikes were always available to demo. I worked with frame builders & racers including Ron Boi. It was demanding but fun, I was very lucky to be there. I spent 80% of my summer & weekend income on a Road Race Paramount bicycle. Fully lugged, top of the line Reynolds tubing, Full Campagnolo Neovo Record group, wood filled tubular rims. Ignore the wheelset, they are a mismatch and not original. Nice ride guys. I've never been with a group that actually regroups. Like I said, in my club (Bombay) I can usually hang on for 10 miles or so before being dropped like a hot potato (it has a lot of crit racers in it, besides), and then I end up in the A-/B+ (AKA being mostly alone). I enjoyed seeing the steel rides - hope to join that family by spring.
I'm checking on August 1 - I think it looks good. Jose, we forgot to talk about Penn State. Mr. Wiswell is an alumnus (branch campus though) and big football fan. |
Great ride. Like Wiswell said, an elite group that re-groups. Awesome.

It was a great ride. Pretty good pace but not competitive. Most of the people in the lead group were in the KR (Kenosha/Racine) bike club.
Hopefully more people can make it on August 1. Wiswell did you get your ice cream? |
Yes. It was awesome. Mocha with fudge ripple.
What was not awesome was the ridiculous US 12 detour outside of Whitewater. I think I'll try ES and A next time. |

Regarding the ride, I had a great time out there today. the pace was brisk, but not to fast and the folks in the lead group were all nice to talk to and considerate of the other riders, going so far as to stop regularly to allow folks to regroup and taking their time at the rest stops. Seeing that rider hit the deck so late in the day sucked, but it didn't appear as though any permanent damage was done. Thanks again to TZRacer for posting this event and for hosting me this morning. Hopefully next time around I can stop in for some beers afterwards. |
My Ride Report;
After about 15 miles of warm up, I found myself with the fastest group. Most were avid cyclists from the Kenosha Bike Club. A really great group, they ride these hills often. Not only does this part of Wisconsin have plenty of short-but-steep hills, but a brisk 15 to 20 mph headwind the first half of the route was a real factor. This group of about 15 had a 20 minute lead on the next group by the 20th mile. Somehow I managed to (more or less) stay with this group the entire event. Most of the paceline travel was 21 to 26 mph. I had to work hard to stay in the group, but it was doable. The hills were another matter, I would drop from the middle of the group to the back on every hill. I could stay with the group for the first half of the climb, but the second half was murder. But I descended as fast as the fastest riders and I could close the gap and regroup. I did this about every 5 miles. I was fortunate that the traffic stops and the two re-groups also allowed me to stay with the group. We stopped at the 30th mile for water and again at the 40th mile for food. I was about 75% spent by the second stop. The group pulled ahead at about the 46 mile and I lost visual contact with them. It became hilly, I hit 40 mph on one downhill without really trying. Just when I was about to stop and check the map, I came across the group again. We were now within 5 miles of the start/stop, and I slacked off and rolled into the finish. One of my fastest rides of the year. It was by far the most demanding and the most fun. Michael |

I think I remember you in this group. What was your kit? I know I hit my fastest average for the year - probably would have been faster if the warm up miles were fewer. Ironically (and stunningly) I may have been involved in leading the kick up of speed after the stop at Gus's and up the hill by US 43 to Honey Creek Rd. I definitely agree on the more or less stayed with the group. I would have been dropped around mile 18-19 or so (I forget where) if not for the stop after they crossed Hwy 83 (or maybe it was 12, I am not really sure). |

{{{{ That's me Michael I'm looking good for August 1 at this point. See you guys then. Did you see the crash with the stocky Russian (Ukrainian?) guy or were you dropped by then? It was about mile 50. Good thing he had a helmet or he would have had much worse than the marble sized knot he got as it was. It sounded awful and thank goodness there was no car coming or he would have been flattened. The other nice thing I noticed about this group was when we were causing a big backup on the road with construction (somewhat near the beginning), we pulled off to let the cars pass. I need these guy to come over and give training to my club. The other sole woman other than me seemed to be somewhat in charge. Maybe it was the woman's touch! Finally, something did happen in the Tour de France. Yesterday and today. About time. |

Does anyone know if there is a short route this weekend? Reading the web sites for the two clubs implies the "short" route is a metric and the long route a full century.
Normally, neither distance is an issue for me, but I, uh...err...overdid it on vacation (a cycling vacation where I rode about twice as many miles and about 5 times the vertical feet in a week than normal) and am still limping along on the bike. With a 40 mile ride there and back, a metric may put me over the edge. |
