Detroit radio station promotes murder of cyclists

Oh man, I just listened to this and my blood boiled. It is 8 minutes long and is a cut of a couple of DJs in Detroit talking about cyclists and the 3 foot rule.

LISTEN HERE

Psi, maybe this is what that dude in that Benz was listening to when he decided to swipe everyone on Old Sutton a couple of weeks ago.

Similar thing just happened over here in Madison, WI this summer. Local FM 'shock jocks' really ripped on cyclists and the cycling community put their feet down! Took it to management and the radio station agreed to air some positive cycling PSA's:

This is really not that bad. They are talking about riders that don't ride on the side. I don't understand when I find a rider going down the middle of the lane with no intention to turn or avoiding holes, etc. They just want to go down the middle of the lane.

Yeah, what better way to change the mind of the station than by running a clown fest in front of their biggest sponsors

Critical massers should be shot. On the spot.

Edit: BTW, nice edit.

As they say on other parts of BF: "Take the lane!"

(I don't agree with that either)

I take the lane, when appropiate, in Schaumburg all the time, esp by the new convention center. Lots of Motorola stooges rushing to work, talking on their cell phones. If I didn't, they'd mow me down....

Not a big deal. Why would any cyclist want to ride through a war zone like Detroit anyway?

I constantly see cyclist in Lorain riding in the middle of the lane and going the wrong way. Two weeks ago I saw some shirtless guy with tat's all over who was pulling a trailer with two kids in it. I politely said that he should be riding with traffic. His response was "yo man" and he gave me the finger. If he keeps it up Darwinism will skip a generation in Lorain, OH.

It must be the entire county, then. I was in my car at a light in downtown Avon many years ago. There was a lady in front of me with a kid in one of those backwards facing wheelbarrow type kids trailer. The kid stood up and stepped out of the trailer, the light changed, and the lady took off. I got out of the car to shepherd the kid off the road, yelled at the lady, and she casually made her way back to me. No hysteria, no thank you. Just yelled at the kid to get back in the trailer, and she took off.

Had some stupid people when I was riding on Jefferson in Detroit north of Woodward more than a month ago yell unintelligibles at me and throw (and miss really bad) an empty plastic bottle in my direction.

As far as riding through Detroit, I'm new to riding my bike for fitness so I don't have much to compare to outside but it seems I often get people that don't even realize bikes have a right to be in the street and it gets old.

I thought I'd avoid traffic tonight for an evening/night ride and some drunk guy in the rear right passenger door of an SUV yelling in his drunk voice when I was almost home, "Get on the sidewalk!" And then proceeded to say the same thing with the car driving and the door open! Wow....Can you call the police on people for harassing you like that? They passed me again after turning off to a street earlier and the same guy said "You lucky bastard" and I finally just gave him a one finger salute.

I don't blow through a stop sign or red light. How could someone "blow" through a stop sign or a light if they are going so slow? ****ing moron. I always slow down and look both ways. There is no harm being done. If you are biking for fitness, who wants to stop at every damn stop light and sign when there are few, even no cars? I'm pretty sure that if I felt I was putting anyone in danger, I wouldn't do it. That is the whole point of such rules.

Hm..let me guess. Grosse Ile, before even listening to it, while having it paused, they'll complain about the bike path but people being in the road still. That path is a joke. Oh..what do you know!!

I listen to that station apparently--a classic rock station and I will not listen to that station anymore now. We already have a hard enough time here in Detroit with motorists and now these clowns are fueling the fire even more. Wow..this station really has issues with cyclists. That is the second time they've aired something about bicyclists, negative of course, on this station. http://dd.wcsx.com/?p=454 They do have a point about following too closely, but honestly, it's sort of a catch 22 in some ways at least I feel that way. If you don't go fast enough, motorists get angry, but going very fast may put you in a situation where if some a-hole slams their brakes, you might end up putting yourself in danger.

Arrogance and intolerance.

And for the record, I take the side of the lane almost all of the time except when the roads are not in very good condition on the right side or I feel there is not enough room by taking the side. Only for safety.

Why should people ride single file? I don't do group rides.

Also, that station is based in "Birmingham-Detroit". It's sort of ironic, because the chair of the department I'm in, Urban Studies and Planning at Wayne State University (in Detroit) is a city planner in Birmingham and I went to a charette in Birmingham just to check it out a while back and he mentioned during the meeting about how people want to be able to ride their bikes more to places and such. Not necessarily saying much but still. I don't think these guys speak for all motorists. Still irritating though. Not really sure anything could be done here in Detroit like in Wisconsin. This is Detroit.

EDIT: I had to let some steam off. I just get tired of being harassed by motorists.

By the way, I didn't hear anything even close to murder. Not seriously. Not something to joke around about though.

TopShelf refers to himself in his signature as a typical old fart, and is from Napoleon Ohio to boot. Consider the source, then, of the above gratuitous quote.
