I'm Definitely Back!

So, rolled out this afternoon after putting up the lights on my huge freakin pine tree as fast as I could (to get a nice ride in). Pulled onto penny and saw another rider. We met at the light and he asked iif I wanted to ride together. I said ... sure; off we go.

Chit chat at fairly decent pace, 18-20 mph. I'm starting to breath hard and have to interrupt my talking and he doesn't. Hmm .. uh oh. I hadn't eaten lunch and started at 1:30 so now I'm thinking I need a gel real quick. We go along Penny and he says he used to do the Harper ride when he lived out here. Hmmm ... uh oh #2. We take it up over 36 mph on Bateman and he's right beside me the whole time. We aren't drafting, just riding side by side. Now I know I"m in trouble. Having not had a hard ride in 3 months and low on fuel ... this looks like a longshot.

We cruise some more and I finally grab a gel at Algonquin. More chit chat ... "So what cat are you?" I ask knowing damn well he's some kind of racer. "Cat 2". "cough ... wheeze ... cough" and I can see my life flashing before my eyes. I go ahead and empty the wheel barrow of excuses on him and we continue to cruise along. Thoughts of faking a crash or finding and trying to ride over glass go though my head.

He's not working very hard but being nice and waiting. I did pretty well on the first two hills up River Road but he gaps me pretty good on the third one, then is nice enough to soft pedal a bit till I can get me fat arse over the crest. We cruise some more and chit chatting. Says he's from Madison and I ask if he knows Tom Theissen (recursive). He says yea, used to race with him on his old team. We both laugh and continue on.

Get to another road asks how long I wanted to ride for. I said I'll try to hang with you as long as I can if you don't mind me slowing you down. He says no problem. So we take a left on some road and head across Rt. 14. This is the normal Harper ride route he explains. I'm still working hard and finally get to where I grab his wheel and he can pull for quite a while. I even tried one of my typical loser attacks on a hill after he pulled for 5 minutes and he had no trouble keeping up with me even though I buried it. Because I've lost so much fitness in the last 3 months my HR goes to the roof real easy now. :(

We chat some more, he's an ME at Wisconsin and I say shoot me your resume and I"ll see if I can help with a job. We finally get to where we're gonna split and I suggest talking to Tom (recursive) as I say he knows how to get a hold of me on bike forums. He say "I'm on bike forums." I say I'm colorchange and he says he's JPradun! LOL.

So, had my first real ride with a great guy and had a really good time. Hope to see him at my biker party (details coming soon).

Here are the numbers. Not impressive but from where I'm coming from, I'm pretty happy.

ColorChange 11-30-09 07:03 AM

Absolutely. I ride in the area all the time. Let me know when.

Scummer 11-30-09 07:38 AM

What a cool coincidence. You met another bike forums member on the road!
It's a humbling experience to ride with the fast guys, eh? :D

Just last Sunday I was dropped on the rolling hills by the group I ride with on the weekend. Man oh man, do I ever suck.

Nice ride. I sent you a PM.

John Wilke 11-30-09 02:13 PM

Be careful if you get caught by anyone in a Radio Shack kit ... It's probably the real deal and will try to talk you into riding all the way TO Madison! LOL Nice story.

Harley jackets and riding chaps required or optional? ;)

Rather than all of those cycling statistics, I'm really more interested in how you get the freakin lights on that super tall pine! Seriously, do you use a crane, throw them and pray from the upper level (would be my strategy)??? haha Congrats on being BACK!

2005trek1200 12-08-09 11:21 AM

hey guys, posting a little note here because i know you all ive in the area (and for some reaosn the new bikeforums wont let me post a new thread, ive contacted the administrator, but no reply)

i just joined this cycling study at providentcrc.com. its testing out a new sports drink, like Gatorade. they pay oyu $500 and you get a free max power test (ie: VO2 Max, max watts, heart rate etc). the study is over 4 weeks. check it out on the webiste.

again, sorry for highjacking the thread, but just thought some locals may be interested.

ColorChange 12-08-09 02:09 PM

I use a 32' extension ladder and a long pole. And the girls wanted me to do the one on the other side of the house ... no way! I do it in honor of my grandpa ... old big bulbs and all. :)
