Bike locked outside Ogilvie Transportation Center over night?
 

I'm considering putting my 20 year-old GF downtown at the train station. I'd hop on it every morning, ride to work, then back to the station to lock it up overnight.

Anyone do this? Not sure how long the bike would last. I'd need to spend ~$50 for a new lock/cable combo, I think.

Tried this, it was gone the first night, and that was a piece of crap bike. Also, do not leave it on the weekends, the property owners have the right to remove them, and they do.

They are located at Millennium Park I believe.

Had my bike stolen in that area in broad day light and it was secured with a cablelock. Don't do it if you want to see your bike again.

folding bike might be a better idea, I'm pretty sure I've seen people with those on rush-hour trains (not just the off-peak trains as for regular bikes).

Can't you bring the bike onto the train. I swear I've seen that being done before. I know my friend has done it, but maybe on the weekends, when it's not as crowded.

check metra's website for bike restrictions. In general, bikes are not allowed on inbound trains during morning rush, outbound trains during evening rush, and certain holiday weekends. I can't remember if folding bikes are considered 'luggage' and allowed on the train during rush periods, I thought i'd seen one once or twice. Depending on the train and what stop you get on, you may have a hard time finding a place to put it though.

+1, I have a friend who commutes from Libertyville to Circle Campus with a folder in his hands.

Don't use cable locks at all. A sharp bolt cutter available at any hardware store will make quick work of them. U-lock is a step up, but they can be beat too, though not as easily. U-lock + cable is better than either alone, but a determined/professional thief will get past both, though they will go for easier targets first.

bottom line crappy bike + u-lock + cable = not worth the effort.
