2010 MATTS Recumbent Overall Winner Passes Away

Hey everyone. I just received an email concerning a fellow ABR and avid recumbent cyclist, Richard Nicodemas, has passed away. It seems he was ran over by a flat-bed truck yesterday while out on a ride. The really sad thing is that he had recently finished painting the front cone on his bike a bright yellow so he is easier to spot. The following is the email that I just received:

---
Dear MATTS Promoters,

ABR member Richard Nicodemas, 2010 MATTS Overall winner of Recumbent/Tandem category passed away on Monday, January 10.

He was riding his recumbent on Monday, Jan 10 when a truck failed to yield the right of way, entered the roadway striking Richard. His enclosed recumbent was newly repainted with a bright nose cone. Richard had a great personality, it was always great to talked to him and see him at the races. He and Tyger Johnson usually came to races together with the recumbents in an enclosed trailer. Richard was 65 yrs old, lived in Orangeville with his wife, they have three children and five grandchildren.

Visitation is Thursday, Jan 13, from 3pm to 7pm at: Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, 504 N. Walnut St. Freeport, IL 61032, 815-233-0613. Funeral Services will be Friday 11:00 A.M. at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home with the Pastor CheonEui Oh officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his memory. Please visit ww.burketubbs.com to sign the online guestbook.

Please pass along to your team mates.
---

My condolences to Richard's family and friends.

God dammit! I just had a discussion about cycling safety with a few friends yesterday about how to ride as defensively as possible so to minimize to prospect of being run over. But mentioning at the same time, when you encounter an inattentive driver, basically you're number is pulled and your life is over no matter how hard you try to stay out of harms way.

RIP Richard, another avoidable and totally unneeded loss.

What's even crazier is that is the bike he was riding. That is him there at the John Fraser Memorial TT in 2006. Instead of the front being red like that, he had just painted it a really bright yellow color. I am sorry, if you can't see that, then you should not be on the road at all.
