Metro Detroit (aka Downriver) completing trail link.

I know this area is known as the Motor-City, but I think some people might be starting to come around. It was just announced that federal funding has been secured to complete a 4 mile linkage (with bridge) between all the Metroparks. This will be a complete 50 mile bike / pedestrian route. I've ridden a good part of this path and really enjoy the scenery.

Reading some of the comments on the Free Press website, it seems like the population of greater Detroit isn't nearly as enthusiastic. That said, if I had something like that in the area that I live in I'd be all about it.

Unfortunately, you get a lot of trolling on the Free Press site. A lot of the comments were removed by the Freep staff. A good part of Michigan is still stuck in the "anything other than an American auto is bad" mindset, but some are coming around.

"It is time to channel that spirit to develop a blueprint for our future and reestablish Detroit as the world’s most innovative city... A city built for the automobile that finally grew to embrace bicycles, greenways and better public transit."

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing during last night's State of the City address.

This is great - I've used those Downriver parks quite a bit, and that link is always the missing step in a trip to Lake Erie.

Next step: extension to Belleville, Ypsi, and Ann Arbor!

Third step (I hope!): Kensington Metropark and Stony Creek Metropark. We should have a SEM bikeway, looping Gibraltar, Macomb, Rochester Hills, Brighton, Dexter, and back to Belleville and Gibraltar. A city circle 200k.
