Tonight while setting up for tomorrow's indoor TT, I heard a few people say they were going to do the autobahn, of course if it wasn't raining.

It was a cold and windy morning. Just as aham23, Scummer and the rest of those insane blokes tiptoe the line, the weather seemed to hold. The head referee blares out a few warnings about something-something in the hairpin turn, but in their shivering and delirious state hardly anyone notices. Two racers crash on the first lap in said hairpin turn and the race continues uneventfully. Scummer sticks his nose into the wind for a little while, but decides to give up the front and slides back about 20 positions as he has felt enough headwind and doesn't want to be bothered with. Some other wannabe Jens Voigts try to break free, but are being reeled in quickly and round and round it goes until shortly before the bell lap the race gets interrupted for a pee break, as the clouds really need to go now and thoroughly soaked bodies are being cooled off in a matter of minutes. So the clouds are done, flushed their stuff out and the leading bunch goes again for another 2 laps. Dropped riders are not allowed to restart and have to watch the drama unfold from the sidelines. Uncontrollable shivering was the result of that short break, but soon the group warms up again and the bunch is cruising at 21mph avg speed around the course. Shortly before the finish stretch the tempo raises a bit, which causes some racers distress as they are popping off the back.

The End.

Pretty accurate report. Wind was simply too high for anyone to get OTF for long. It was a day for the big guys, battle up the last hill into a headwind to get good position for the final corner and then wind her up to max speed in the downhill tailwind and keep it there. The officials handled everything well and made the right calls, I think.

Sounded like a good time. Looks like results won't be up until tomorrow, though.

Anybody have any idea how the 1/2/3 race went?

Masters 4/5: Half of the field were shelled on the first two laps. Brutal crosswinds. Restarted with under 30 riders after the storm. About a dozen got dropped on the last lap.

Discarded my fogging glasses for the last two laps. Big mistake as I ended up getting full rooster tails of near freezing water in my eyes for the rest of the race. Forgot how unpleasant that is.

Masters 3/4 : Small field. Mostly 4s who had already raced plus a few 3s. Lots of DNSs. Not a strong field. There were several attempts to go OTF that didn't get anywhere. Bridged up to the one break that looked promising but was so knackered from the effort that I couldn't pull. My token attack for the day.

MJH2, you would have cleaned up in this one. Finish was made for you.

Cat 4: First lap: Got around the third corner, hit the wind and my muscles locked up. Nothing I could do about it. Tempo'd it home with a few others. Rode a century yesterday so this wasn't unexpected.

BH cleaned up in the 4s.

Surprised to see quite a few faces still in the 4s who I would have expected to have more than enough upgrade points by now.

Was talking to Beverly Bob, he's lost a bunch of weight and a gall bladder. Not racing but looking pretty well.

Jostein went down twice - While OTF in the 4/5's and then in the 4's. Joe got 3rd in the 4/5's - staying upright. Saw Jostein later in the day at Joe's fundraiser - he was limping bad. looked like he hurts. Still hell bent on getting out of the 4's

Carlos - on the upgrades- everyone with points has tried but the genius who is the upgrade coordinator now simply upgrades based on what he wants to do - usually ignoring what the rule book says. We have brought it up more than once. We'll see ho he is this year. As for the big guns who should upgrade but haven't - they actually don't have the points. Christ - prime example.

Yeah, Bob's advancement in weight loss and power gain are staggering to say the least.
I think I go for voluntary gall blader removement. Screw HGH, EPO and all the other ****.

Wasn't alleging any bagging at all. Just surprise. The upgrade coordinator explains a lot. Several of the prominent players would make fine cat 3s and deserve an upgrade.

The other thing I wanted to mention is wheels and tires. With 25 mph gusts I was really surprised to see so many deep section wheels out there. I also wonder how many people lowered their tire pressure significantly for the conditions. I ran 25 mm tires at about 92 psi and felt glued to the surface, but lots of folks were talking about how sketchy it was in places.

We have two that we are pushing hard for the upgrade and they have both picked up points this week.

As for the tires I am pretty sure Jostein did not reduce pressure.

The upgrading has gotten just silly. Our Cat 4 team is stronger than our Cat 3 team. We have 4 guys who would be threatening to score points in the 3's and they're all stuck in the 4's. One of them is too small to be a real sprint threat but would make a great 3... so he'll probably never get upgraded. One applied for an upgrade over the winter and was denied. Whatever. Get used to the blue and black on the 4's podium until those guys get bored.

Sounded like a great time out there on Saturday. Unfortunately, I won't really be racing until I've got enough miles on the new frame to be comfortable. Hopefully by HIllsboro.

Saturday would certainly have had fewer crashes than Sunday!

Don't know what to say about the upgrades. At some stage the powers that be may wonder why there are no new faces in the threes and get wise. Extremely hard to get any upgrade points in the 4s if you're not a musclebound sprinter.

Just had a teammate cross the upgrade points threshold. I expect that he'll be a two much quicker than he became a three. The style of racing will suit him better.

Good point. I actually had a nice, long ride on Saturday.

I don't think the current power that be at upgrading cares much about anything except race wins... which is silly in 4 and 5. Fat guys like me get to move up, while riders with power profiles more suited to 1/2 racing take longer to move up.

If that's going to be the way it goes, they should really change the rules. Or clarify the rules.

Actually he pretty much makes it standard practice to deny all first apps. If you protest it then he almost always upgrades you. All of this is without regard to the actual rules. I have seen racers that meet the criteria laid out in the rules be denied on their first attempt. They took it at face value now get money in just about every race.

I have seen other racers who didn't qualify apply then get denied. Protest and then get upgraded after the protest.

At one point last year he was denying all cat 5->4 upgrades even if you had your 10 starts. His reasoning: "I believe that cat 5 should be a 12 month" stay. That's nice - I believe that grass should not grow faster than my available time to mow.

Be that as it may - I just pin a number on and ride around in circles. Sometimes I even get to do that with other people. I just do what the guys and gals in the blue shirts tell me to do. Even if it happens to be Carlos.
