I rode this last year, got kind of lost in Racine but found a knowledgeable guy who escorted me to the outskirts of Milwaukee. I want to do it again. I can't find detailed instructions on the internet. Can anyone help?

Here is one route. I've heard Rt 32 is reasonable from Kenosha all the way to Milwaukee. Sherridan Rd is good through the end of 137 at Golf Rd in Waukegan. From there it is a busy 4 lane through Zion and Winthrop Harbor but I have stil ridden it. You can take side streets like Keith to Jackson, to North. Lakeshore Drive through Pleasant Prairie is very scenic. Once you hit Wisconsin there is no shortage of good routes.

I find that passing through Gurnee is better than remaining along the lakefront in Waukegan. This route uses the North Branch and Skokie Valley bike paths and is both bike friendly & scenic.

If you have a bike with touring tires, the Des Plaines River Trail is the best way through Lake County all the way to Russell RD. You can access the Des Plaines River Trail from the corner of Everett and St. Mary's.

That route is also OK though I am unsure about Delany RD. I've ridden with the Evanston Bike Club up that way several times and we avoid it like the plague. I think it is either under construction or when I rode it last year the pavement was in very poor condition. We instead turn left at Old Grand go over the Des plaines river on the sidewalk, cut through the Walgreens there and take Riverside north to Glendale west to Fuller north to Stearns School west to Hunts Club and that north into Wisconsin and when it ends take Wilmot to rejoin the posted route on 88th st.

Yes, once you get north of Gurnee Mills, Hunt Club is better than Delany. However, getting from Gurnee to Hunt Club involves some well traveled roads because of the mall traffic. In any event, avoiding central Waukegan by passing through Gurnee is advised.

My route only requires about 2.5 miles on Delany. The remaining route north of Gurnee in bike-friendly.

The ultimate route through Lake county is the Des Plaines River trail if your bike has 32mm wide tires;

According to Lake County Govt Delany is under construction this year as it is being widened to 5 lanes. There is only one lane open in each direction and probably no shoulder. Kilbourne is also being resurfaced.

I recommend either the Desplaines River Trail or my route. When Oplaine Rd ends turn left on Old Grand. Get on the sidewalk and go over the river and cut through the Ace/Walgreens parking lot. Then go north on Riverside less than 1 block to Glendale. Take Glendale west to Fuller. Take Fuller north to Stearns School. Then take Stearns School to Hunts Club. Stay on Hunts Club until it ends and take Wilmot back to Kilbourne.

Another detour around Delany, while it is under construction, is to head west on Washington before entering the area near central Gurnee and staying south of Six Flags. There is a paved bike path along Washington that takes cyclist west and under the Tollway. Turn Right on North Cemetery and then left on Woodland Intermediate School to get to Hunt Club Road. There is also a Panera Bread near the SW corner of Hunt Club and Grand Ave which makes for a good meal midway to Milwaukee.

I did both routes today via Waukegan, Zion, Winthrop Harbor, and home via 88th st Wilmot Hunts club. There is no reason to avoid the Waukegan route I didn't go through any questionable neighborhoods and I really like Lakeshore Drive through Pleasant Prairie. It is one of the highlights of the ride. I also passed quite a few cyclists in North Chicago and Waukegan. Once I got on Jackson street the route all the way through Zion and Winthrop harbor had markings on the pavement a big neon orange circle with a line through it pointing the way. I took Sherridan the last couple miles accorss the Wisconsin border.

On the way home I got a bit lost and ended up riding on hwy 50 for a few miles (more than a little hair raising). There were no issues taking 88th Wilmot or Hunts Club. I didn't have a chance to try the Washington Street Route as I needed to stop at the Walgreens in Gurnee for Gatorade. Here is the route I took ( or rather the route I should have taken using 60th st to go west to 88th rather than ending up on 50).
