Looking for advice on buying a retro bike.

Hello all,

I am looking to buy a bike, go figure.

Here is the description of one I found:

"Motobecane Grand Jubilee bicycle for sale. Barely ridden and stored properly after its purchase in the mid 1980's. 21inch frame ALL ORIGINAL bicycle. Still has nipples on the tires! Vitus 172 tubes, Mafac competition center pull brakes, Regida wheels, Nervar cranks and gear changing by Simplex. Not ridden enough to stain the plastic gear guard. Only needs new tubes and cables.

Here are some pictures:

The bike is listed for $225.

I'm wondering if $225 is worth it?

The new tubes and cables are not a problem for me. I'm just not familiar with the bike model.

Thank you for your help,

Leigh17

Hey Leigh...copy your post and move it to the Classic and Vintage forum. Those guys will fetch you up :-) I like the vitus bikes, that prices sounds a bit high, however if the bike is near mint condition the way you describe it, it could fetch near that price. There is also a Classic / Vintage "Whats it Worth Forum Too".

This is a pretty nice bike and may well be worth the asking price if it is in "as new" condition. The bike will need an overhaul though (grease, unlike wine, does not get better with age). Vitus 172 tubing is pretty good stuff; the components are good quality as well.
