Best twin cities road rides?

I'm a newer cyclist and new to the twin cities. I spent most of my riding last year on different grand rounds paths; cedar lake trail, kenilworth, minnehaha, etc. looking for some rides about 40-60 miles leaving from Minneapolis. Anyone have some good ones?

I was told about a trail from St. Paul to Stillwater which would be about 60-70 miles from uptown but I'd love to find more good long rides. Thanks!

I used to circle the entire Minneapolis metro area via the MUP system, the river road section was my favorite.

Also used to ride around lake Minnetonka, although traffic can be heavy at times. I'm not sure about the distance, this was well before Google maps.

That is the Gateway Trail, and a nice ride. But the great road riding starts where the Gateway ends! The Minnesota Ironman ride is in April in this area. (https://ironmanbikeride.org) I live across the river in WI, and there are nice roads on both sides of the river, especially down around Afton, some challenging hills!

Thanks! I'm actually looking to ride in the Minnesota Ironman. What is the weather usually (I moved here last May)?

The riding near Afton is good; the MN Major River to River Ride takes place around Afton. I also like the area south of Prescott, WI (hwy 35 - Great River Road). I live in Hastings so do a lot of riding south of there towards Welch/Vasa. Sometimes I go West towards Apple Valley/Burnsville. The riding near Red Wing is also quite good. This summer I plan to do some of the Erik's Eagan club rides since they are located halfway between work and home.

Now, to the OP's question of good road rides leaving from Minneapolis I don't know. I like to be in the middle of nowhere when I road ride (for the most part) so I think I'd probably be driving to other locations to start out from.

April is a crap shoot, one year it was in the high 20s-low 30s, windy and a little slow mixed in! I would count on it being cold, at least at the start. And spring is always windy especially with no leaves on trees, nothing growing to break the wind.

I think two years ago we had 80's in April and last year we had 30's.
