Cro Moly Frames
How many old school hybrid riders are using Cr Moly frames? Don't want to start a war between steel and aluminum fans just wondering how many steel riders are out there and what brand/model hybrid your riding.

1. comfortable, free of road buzz ride
2. good value 3. sturdy frame- I can lock this up and not get easily seen scratches as opposed to a shiny glossy frame. Granted matted silver/gray is not totally pleasing to look at sometimes 4. Fit- seems tailored made for me Would love to see a higher performance steel hybrid made by Jamis one day if there market would ever expand for it. |

I have been putting quite a few miles this Summer on my '95 Trek 720 Multi-Track, but I also ride my '91 Schwinn CrossCut. This year I started edging back over into aluminum with a late '80s high-end Raleigh U.S.A. Technium hybrid that is in "as new" condition. It has a frame that is part chrome molybdenum and part Alcoa aluminum. I also bought a brand-new Diamondback Insight with an aluminum frame and fork. For some reason, I feel more comfortable and secure riding steel frames. The Insight is pretty nice, though. I've only ridden the Raleigh a couple of times, not enough to form an honest opinion. Update (10/1/16): the Raleigh is awesome!

I just switched from a 1995 Trek 730 Multitrack to a 2008 Surly Karate Monkey.....both cro-moly steel.

My friend in Japan only makes custom CroMo frames and makes a small fortune too. Both my wife and daughter rides his bikes.

riding a 1972 puch road bike with flat bars and 531 tubing, 1986 univega mtb crmo, 1992 bianchi hybrid crmo, and a 1984 fuji mixte, with flat bars and valite tubing.

I went from a 1991 Schwinn CrissCross to a 1997 Trek 730 Tracklight. My Takara Deluxe Touring is also a Cromoly.

All my previous bikes along with whats in the garage now besides what I ride regularly, were steel.
Now I ride a aluminum with carbon rigid fork 29'er "hybrid" .......and its my best ride. Either or..........It's all metal and I still like steel especially Salsa's like the ones shown above.....yet Alum with a carbon fork is sweet. I never got into skinny , high psi tires, fast light road bikes........where one would see more difference perhaps...........and still don't like them be it flat or drop bar.... :) Touring bikes, MTB's, hybrid MTB's/Trekking, riser,flat or flared drop.....aluminum,steel frame, select carbon parts.....all the rest...... you can have ;) |

Not an old school steel bike, but I ride a Jamis Coda Sport. Although it is a classic frame shape.

1997 Bianchi Advantage. I don't ride it all that much anymore, but it is my son's street bike.

My Bianchi Avenue, bought new in 1993 when hybrids were a still a new thing. Still have and ride it. :thumb:

I've tried adjusting to the modern hybrid bike, but I don't like stiff aluminum frames and threadless headsets - they're terrible off-road. I prefer a buttery ride, so I've gone back to steel. I've outfitted a few '90's cross bikes with new parts to accommodate my tall frame and moderate lean. My latest is a '91 Bianchi cross bike with the unfortunate name, Boardwalk. But it's my current favorite, having a 23" frame, whereas most are limited to 22". This one got a new seat, seatpost, stem, bars, shifters, cables, tires, and pedals. I don't get worked up over primo components. The white paint offered a new theme to riff.

About four years ago I found a Nyala on the side of the road! This fool was cleaning out his garage. Perfect condition loved the way the cro-molly lugged frame rode. However at 15inch it was a bit small. However it inspired me to get a boardwalk and a project 3 both 93 bikes with lugged frames. The Project 3 was a tad big so I got the Bianchi dealer (the Bike Spot) to swap out the stem for a old shorter stem he had laying around. It rides great now. He swears to get the same great ride I would have to spend a lot of money. These old lugged frames just smooth out the bumps.
