front derailleur lever direction

I have two 10 speed bicycles- one is a 1974 Araya and the other is a 1980 Schwinn Traveler. The lever for the front derailleur on the Araya works in the opposite direction of the Schwinn. Was it common for derailleur lever direction to be different or is there supposed to be some kind of standard?

I have an old suntour front derailleur from the 80s that shifts to a smaller ring when you pull the cable. One advantage is that both shifters shift to a harder or easier gear by pulling in the same direction. Other than that it just makes me shift to the grany when I want to get the large chainring. It does shift remarkably quiet and smooth

Back then there were more manufacturers of drivetrains

I don't know if it was "common", but I've also experience a Suntour High Normal FDER from a 73ish Takara 10 speed.

I believe the logic was that a "positive" downshift was more important than the upshift since you would likely be climbing a hill when you needed it.
