Upgrade for Cube Editor 2014
 

So I've posted a thread sometime ago regarding a decent hybrid bike within 500 euro range. I got pretty sceptical after hearing your opinions that I won't be able to find one but I found this crazy deal on craiglist and bought myself Cube Editor 2014 for exactly 500e. The bike is pretty much in mint condition, except a few very tiny scratches.

Since I got it for so cheap I'm thinking of upgrading it a little bit. However, I'm not sure if that's necessary so I need your help.

The things I'd like to upgrade:

1. Flat pedals. Current pedals are the standard Cube pedals (I believe so?) and they are the worst looking part of this bike. I'm thinking of putting Fyxation Mesa 61 Alloy Platform Pedals. They match the look of Editor and seem to be pretty durable.

2. I'm not a huge fan of full mudguards, especially when they are made from plastic like mine. Plus it doesn't rain as much where I live so I found this Ass Saver which looks relatively small and practical for what it's worth. Your thoughts on mudguards?

3. I'm also not sure about the SDG Rock City saddle which doesn't look too comfortable. I've been looking at many various saddles, however my knowledge is very limited in this area and I would need your advice on what kind of saddles would fit such bike. I know it has a lot to do with personal preference but overall I'm looking for something that would work while staying pretty low on the bike.

4. I know bike computer is not a must but I'm willing to try it anyways if any of you offer one. Garming Edge 520 looks really nice but I is a little bit out of my price range. Anything withing $100 range is appreciated.

5. Last but not least is of course a lock. I had terrible locks in the past and now I guess is the right time to get a decent one. My current favourite is Kryptonite Messenger Mini. It's pretty secure, long and light in weight so all in all seems like a golden middle. I'm not sure if I should invest in a more expensive and heavier lock.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I'm surprised to hear that you got negative comments on BF regarding a 500 euro hybrid or about 550 US.
Both the Trek FX and the Specialized Sirrus can be bought for that price. These are wildly popular bikes that many enjoy 'as is' but are easily up gradable.

Well I guess I didn't put it the right way. I was actually looking for a hybrid with internal gear hub and hydraulic disc brakes. I guess that's why people have replied saying that such bikes go for more than 500 euros. My bad for not making it clear enough.

When you're buying a new bike, that's true. You would have a hard time finding a bike with an IGH and hydraulic brakes for that price. There are no "rules" about what you might find used on Craigslist, though.

Well personally I use Strava on my phone as a bike computer. Some people don't like using their phone as a bike computer because it can eat up your battery, but I just keep one of these in my bike bag.

As far as locks are concerned, the most important thing to remember is that even the best, most expensive lock is just a deterrent. What type of deterrent you need depends on where you live and where you plan on leaving the bike. Are you going to leave it in the same spot every day for work, are you going to leave it outside your home or apartment, etc.

Yeah, I've heard using phone is just much easier. I don't know if I would like to keep my phone mounted on the bike though.

Regarding locks, I was wondering if 11mm or 18mm steel locks differ in any way? I mean, it's not like a thieft's gonna see an 18mm lock and think 'oh, that's 7mm too thick, I won't touch it'. And they always seems to weight a lot more. I'm mostly going to be locking it in a city centre where it's usually pretty busy during day time. So I guess I don't need the thickest one.

If a slightly higher profile is OK, you cannot go wrong with the durability of shimano pedals: Shimano MX80 Saint Pedals > Components > Pedals > Platform Pedals | Jenson USA

As for the saddle, give it a few months so that you can either get used to it or be able to pinpoint exactly what is wrong with it

If you lock the bike up a lot, you may consider replacing the QRs to slow down the thief and maybe even some sort of frame protection to prevent dings and scratches. I sometimes use a soft rubber tape to wrap the frame tubes

I quite like these Xpedo pedals. They look pretty nice and have good reviews on their durability. I'll check them out.

Regarding the saddle, I guess you're right. I'll just have to give it a bit more time and see how it feels.
