Talking New to Biking

Hello all. So I have been riding the past few years to work mostly just to take less of a hit on my car and to benefit from a little exercise. Well now I really enjoy biking not just for the mere benefits of getting to work. I'm not sure if I want to be road biking or hitting some trails so the best bet for me at this point is a hybrid. The problem is after all of my research I cant decide what route to go on a bike. I have found helluva good deals on Diamondback Trace Sports online, but I keep hearing how getting one at your local bike shop is the way to go. You test ride bikes so you can be properly fitted and then I get all of the maintenance and tuning included and no internet purchase can beat that persoanl customer service. I get all of that but my bike shops only carry Giant and Specialized which I realize are probably better bikes with better components. But it is so hard to pass up on a great deal on teh Diamondback with all of the added features (disc brakes, suspension fork). Help me. What are pros and cons of those bikes? Convince me why I shouldnt get online. All help appreciated.

You should if saving money makes you feel good. Some of us like the feel of one bike over another and the only way to determine that is test riding. I walked into the LBS to buy a Trek and walked out with a Specialized because it just fit me better.

The Diamondback components are adequate, but a $700 bike will have much better/smoother operation. It has 3x8 acera components where the better bikes are better. The mechanical disc brakes just don't have the feel of hydraulics and need to be adjusted often. In other words, the entry level Diamondback components aren't going to work as well or be as durable as more upscale bikes, but the only way to determine if that matters to you is to try them out. Check out similar components on a specialized or giant bike, and then check out higher end components.

Returns and warranty service of on line purchases are not as smooth as a local LBS.

That being said, lots of folks here are happy with mail order bikes. If you have a Dicks Sporting goods in the area, they typically stock some diamondback models.

Performance also sells Diamondback bikes and really good accessories. Pricing is good and they have a liberal
exchange and return policy.

here is my take. from the knowledge that i have acquired from listening to martin horn who claims a combined total of over a half a million miles riding bikes and over a span of some 40 something years.
1-drive train parts in the shimano family go up in price as you go up the shimano food chain, primarily because of LIGHTER weight. the weight factor in buying a hybrid bike should be of lesser priority, than say maneuverability a and visibility in traffic.
2-disc brakes are of greater advantage on MOUNTAIN bikes, when you are on mudd,y non-paved roads. i find KOOL-STOP pads and probably other pricey pads do an adaquate job on paved roads, dry, and wet.
3- if you are handy with tools you should have no problem building a bike that is already partly assembled. plus there are youtube videos to help you out. anyway i have had no problem with assembling a mail order bike.
4- don't be surprised if the kids that work in the bike stores leave alot to be desired in bike knowledge or in your best interests. i have 2-lbs shops in my neighborhood, at one the bike mechanic can not speak understandable english, and at the other bike shop, they just don't have the time for customers at the low-end of the bike market.
5-you are probably best learning anyway, how to work on your bike. i don't know about you, but in my area, (NASSAU COUNTY,N.Y.), the bike shops as well as every other store are overcrowded, and you have to wait a week for the work to be done on your bike. that does not go over well with me, especially in the few good bike riding months here on long island.
