Just picked up this nice Schwinn Super Sport GS

N+1 reared it's ugly head again this weekend, when I saw a really nice condition Schwinn Super Sport GS on the local CL in San Diego:

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/bik/5567231390.html

Seller mis-identified it as a Super Sport, rather than a Super Sport GS - main differences are a Carbon fork vs. Aluminum, better derailleurs/shifters, and canti brakes, and a $300 higher list price. Other than the bike having a pair of flat tires (tubes and tires OK, they just needed air), and a chain that needed some lube, this bike needed absolutely nothing, and hasn't got a cosmetic blemish on it. This is my first flat bar road/gravel bike, so it actually fills a purpose for me, and since it's Aluminum, and it will take tires up to 35s, (28s with fenders) it may also become my rain bike, and it has got major climbing gears (26 granny ring in front with 36 and 48 rings as well) and a 9-speed 11-32 in back. For a Schwinn of this era (2006) this bike is surprisingly capable and well spec'd. It was from Schwinn's Signature line, which was meant to sell via bike shops, and this one was originally sold by Performance. It tips the scales at 23.5 pounds with a heavy Alex 500 wheel set, including pedals, reflectors, and bottle cage and empty bottle, and Vittoria Rubino 25s, which I plan to replace with something fatter when they wear out. It's got a Carbon fork, and eyelets for mounting racks and/or fenders. It's got SRAM X-7 RD and shifters, and a Shimano Deore FD. Shifting was right on the money, and the brakes (Cantis) work well and needed no adjustment. This bike had been sitting in a storage locker for several years, but it needs no tuning to speak of.

Retail on this bike was $699, and it probably sold for at least $550-600 in 2006/2007. I gave the seller his full $100 asking price, after he turned down my initial offer of $80 - which I only tried because the bike had been listed for 6 days already, and because I assumed I'd need to put new tubes in (which I don't).

Nice find!

As a LBS Schwinn, its generally considered superior to the big box store Schwinns.

It should serve you well for years to come.

$100 for a nicely equipped bike is a good deal.

Well, now it's a $111 bike that weighs 24 lbs. because I just put a cheap set of plastic fenders on it. So it really will be my bad weather bike. And frankly, the frame and fork is high quality stuff far beyond what I paid for this thing. This bike is very comparable to a Specialized Sirrus Sport, a Trek FX, or a Cannondale Quick Speed.

After a shakedown ride this morning, my new CL acquisition posed for some pictures: My only additions since the aqcuisition were the plastic clip-on fenders and the 2nd bottle cage and pump w/mount. The condition of this thing is the cleanest bike I've ever seen on Craigslist - there is not a mark on the frame, pretty amazing for a 10 year-old bike that's clearly spent almost it's whole life in storage.

That's a fine pick up for $100. The schwinns that came out just before the company started selling in box stores are some pretty nice bikes. I have an mtb from that era.

Actually, this was after they sold to big box stores, but they have a separate lineup that only is sold in bike shops. This bike was originally sold in a Performance shop in SoCal, based on a decal on the downtube. MSRP was $699 in 2006, and even on end-of year clearance, this was probably a $500-550 + tax when new bike nearly 10 years ago. With the fenders, reflectors, 2 bottle cages, and pedals, and fairly heavy Alex-500 wheels, it's a 24 ib. bike.
