What tires do you run on your hybrid?
 

I feel sure this has been discussed before but as you can see I am new here. I am looking to change out tires for ones with a little more grip while hitting the side trails. I don't want to sacrifice too much on the streets but I do realize that I am going to have to give up a little to get a little. What do you suggest? The bike is a Trek FX.

700c X 32

Schwalbe Marathon Plus. I believe your bike has 700x25 tires so you will need to check clearance as well as rim width to see how big a tire can be fit.

You can't go wrong with 700x32 Vittoria Randoneurs or Scwalbe Marathons

I have a FX 7.5, I run 25's. The bike came with 32's, complete slugs. So I went to 28's, still heavy and too big for me. The bike handles well, rides well, and accelerates well with the 25's. I could go to 23's but I think it would ride too harsh for me.

Maybe too big for your liking and fit but I went with 35c Schwalbe Mondials. I do about 20% hard pack trail riding.

First question is what will the FX frame accommodate. Unlike the DS, Trek doest make a point of saying what it will accommodate up to so you'll have to go by what other FX riders have already tried etc.

That said, Kenda is now doing their Small Black Eight in a true 700 size, in x32 and x35 (better than before when all we could do is do the 29x1.9 and hope it fit). Make you feel like you have knobys when on the trail but still rolls half decent on the pavement.

I had small block eights about 5 years ago and they were incredible. Mine were folding and very light. I had 700 x 32mm

I'm currently using Bontrager H5 and can't fault their grip. They are freekin heavy though. 700 x 32

After four flats in one month last year with Specialized Hemispheres 700x38 -- which were otherwise very good budget tires -- I switched to Michelin Protek Cross Max 700x40. Heavy, but very puncture resistant -- no flats so far on grass burrs, broken glass, metal shards, etc. -- and very good on pavement, chipseal, dry or wet gravel, dry or damp open fields. But they slip on steep climbs up bare dry dirt. And the sharp raised shoulder feels a bit squirmy on tight turns. Good all terrain tires if the priority is flat resistance. They seem to be durable, although I've ridden only around 1,000 miles on 'em.

Question for you. What size, and type of tire are you currently using? Do you find your tires losing grip or sliding out on your rides? Have you tried running your tires at a slightly lower pressure when going off road?

A little more control off road might cost you ride quality or weight on pavement.

Bontrager AW2 700x28 Folding. Huge improvement over the stock 32's that came on my FX.

i have 4 with vittoria zaffiro 700 x28 and one with kenda kwest 700 x 35 and one 27" with conti 11/4 [32mm]. mostly converted steel road bikes to flat bars and triple cranks, 1 is aluminum. i ride 100% road.

For now I run 29 x 2" Marathon Mondials(Evolution) on my Toughroad and I don't know if I will ever go below 40mm as my regular tyre when I try the new Marathon Supreme.

Lots of choices. I just bought a fx for my foul weather rides, primarily gravel. It came stock with the Bontrager H2 Hard-Case Lite w/puncture resistant belt, 700x35c tires on it, and frankly, they work just fine for me. I haven't noticed it spinning out/fish tailing as I find my line, nor harsh to ride, though I tend to ride gravel with lower tire pressure. I have some Panaracer Tserve PT 700x38's on another hybrid I use for commuting, and occasional gravel riding, and again, no issues. A 3rd bike is my primary gravel grinder, with gravel specific tires Challenge Gravel Grinder 120 tpi 700x38. Love those tires, will probably put them on the FX when I need to replace tires.

We (my wife and I) have several different tire sets for different terrains/conditions/ride-types (all of these are for My 2016 Cannondale Quick CX1 and my wife's 2014 Spec. Crosstrail Sport Disc):

32c Conti Gatorskins (speedier, higher PSI 'road riding')
35c Vittoria Revolution G+ (urban and light gravel-grinding)
35c Schwalbe Sam Slick (light off-road, gravel and mixed terrain trails - love these tires...prob my 2nd fav. tires right now)
40c Maxxis Re-Fuse (awesome 'everything tires'! Urban trekking, gravel, hard-pack off-road, paved trails, grass/clay/packed dirt, etc. These are very much my fav. tires right now. Large and comfortable - yet still very fast, grippy and capable on many surfaces!)

I want to thank you guys for all your input. There are so many really choices out there. I have decided go with the Schwalbe Mondials. I will post a review after a few rides. Thanks again.

I ride the 50mm version of the Mondials and they are excellent tyres.

I used to run wire bead Vittoria Randonneurs (700x28) but my rear tire sidewall was starting to bulge so I decided to change both the front and rear tire. I replaced them with kevlar bead (i.e. folding) Specialized All Condition Armadillo Elite (also 700 x 28). The difference is like night and day - the Specialized tires are considerably faster than the Randonneurs were.

I have a friend who just put those on her road bike. Time will tell if she made the right choice.

700x40C Schwalbe Hurricane. Love them, nice grip on the tarmac and on forest trails.
