the 2nd bike has Bontrager 700x35 smoothish hybrid tires. was thinking it might be fun to outfit it with something bigger as in more volume. but not sure I'll keep the bike, I need to put some miles on it
I have a road bike and a backup road bike so I'm just screwing around with these other two bikes to break up the paved routine

I love rail trails. These tires look like they'll work on trails though it claims to be a street tire.
Have you checked into a cx tire? At the moment I use a 29'er mtb with not too aggressive knobby tires but I think I could probably do better with a bit smaller cx tire on it.

I have looked at CX tires. I don't really need tires, just having some fun thinking about it. the more I ride the more I'll understand what I want. re 29'er tires it's funny how there's a kind of threshold spectrum from the big wide tires scaling down to something else that would fit a narrower forked hybrid. last weekend as I was arriving and also later on the trail I saw a cpl guys on 29'ers and they were geared up pretty well w hydration packs and suited for high speed dirt trails but not twisty singletracks. I got one bike for $50 and the tires are fine so I should resist spending anymore money with the holidays coming ...
