Newbie needs help!....New vs used?
I'm looking to purchase my first bike with gears after only learning to ride 2 years ago on a cruiser. My husband and I found a Schwinn Trailway that I like as well as a (very gently) used Giant Sedona SE. Both will cost exactly the same to the penny. Which would be most recommended? Neither my husband or myself know much about bikes and after trying to find reviews we are both confused? My husband thinks that although the Giant is used it may be a better bike however I am finding reviews on the Schwinn Trailway being comparable to a Giant and think maybe new vs used is better. Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't know much about the Giant but I had a trailway for a little while. It's probably one of the nicer department store bikes available but if you're buying it from target be prepared to do some adjustments. The one I bought was assembled terribly. That said I did like it quite a bit. I only had it for a few months because it just didn't fit me very well. I'm slightly taller than average (5'6 with long legs) and it was too small for me. My friend is 5'3 and it was too big for her. I'm not really sure who it's suppose to fit. You might want to consider visiting a local bike shop to see what size bike you actually need. You might also be able to find a bike in your price range, as a lot of shops are closing out 2017 models.

I believe the Giant is a better bike and you're better off with a better used bike than a not quite as good new bike. New v. used isn't all that significant in bikes unless the use was abusive.
Having said that, fit and feel are equally if not more important. If one or the other feels better to you, that should make the decision easy. Looks are of course less important, but not completely irrelevant. You should like your bike.
The other potential consideration is who is selling the bike (assuming they aren't from the same store). I think it's better to deal with a bike shop you like than a box store or private seller as you may want accessories, tune-ups, or just advice in the future and you'll already have an established relationship.

If you're a newb I don't recommend getting a used bike until you've been around a while and know what to look for. Lots of things can be wrong with a bike that a newb wouldn't catch.

I agree with most Giant is a better bike but it’s got to be the right size. Look at overall condition, is the paint beat up ect indicating neglect, tires and tubes can add up but any bike shop can do that and a tune up.
Schwin isn’t what it used to be.
