Depends on the bike/tires.

On the Globe Carmel with heavy duty 700x40 Michelin Protek Cross Max, I rotated tires after a year for more even wear. These have thick chevron tread and relatively little wear. That bike is almost never ridden faster than 12 mph, mostly for local errands. Those Michelins have rigid sidewalls and the bead won't roll off the rim. I'm not worried about crashing so rotating is fine.

On the Univega with Continental Speed Rides, the rear is showing some wear after 1,600-2,000 miles. Eventually I'll move the front tire to the rear and get a new tire for the front. I do ride that bike fast and on some steep downhills. So while the bead will hold on the rims when flat, I'm not taking chances on a worn front tire.

On my road bike with skinny 700x23 slicks, I won't take any chances. New tire on the front at a minimum. I'll decide about swapping the old front to the rear after seeing how well these Schwalbe 1 V-Guards hold up. So far after six weeks and about 1,000 miles I'm impressed. No cuts or nicks, low wear. That particular model isn't available anymore but I'll consider Schwalbes again when I need to replace these.

With it being a folding tyre, I suspect it will corner better and have less rolling resistance than the wired Marathon Plus.
Off topic but do you have any experience with the Schwalbe Durano Plus?

Lighter, available in 700x25 and appear to have similar (although slightly less) puncture resistance as the Marathon Plus. These might just do the trick for me.

No unfortunately I have never used those tyres.

Mine rotate when I ride....

(Sorry. I could help myself. I tried. I really tried. But I just couldn't stop myself from saying it)

And no, to the real question. I've never rotated my tires. Just replace them wear out.

If you rotate them they should last twice as long.

So let's say you rotate them and your tires last 2 years. After 2 years you buy 2 new tires.

If you don't rotate them the rear tire will last 1 year and then you buy 1 new tire. (And the front will probably last until the rubber literally rots off the wheel)

Either way you are buying tires as the rate of 1 tire per year.

So rotating them is just extra work.

Just to update: I snagged them at a nice discount / price match and got em for $45 each. They arrived Friday and I have 2 rides on them so far totaling about 76 miles.

Pros:

1. It's a folding tire and easy to get on. About the same as getting a folding Gatorskin on.
2. Much lighter than the 700x28 Conti Contact Sport tires I had on before.
3. Uses same flat protection tech as the legendary Marathon Plus but they have slightly less protection than those do.
4. Rides smooth and easy with excellent road grip and feel.

Cons:

1. None so far

These are about 200 grams per tire less weight than the Contact Sport tires I had on my BMC. Of course these are 700x25 where as my Contact Sports were 700x28. These are also folding and the Sport Contacts were wire bead. One note though: These are directional tires so check for proper direction before installing.

My main goal here is not speed and I am more interested in flat protection. I ride on cruddy city roads and there is debris everywhere. On my Sirrus bike I mainly roll with Gatorskins but they do not hold up well after about 1500 miles or so. I aslo cycle on the MUP and it's loaded with goatheads. The Garotskins are terrible with sidewall goatheads as are the Sport Contacts. The Conti Contact Sport tires are pure garbage as far as any kind of flat protection goes! I've had 3 flats in 500 miles since trying them. Off to the trash can they go!

I am hopeful these Schwalbe's will do the trick.

In the spirit of the thread, since I went off topic, I do plan on running the rear down then rotating the front to rear and a new on the front. Assuming these do the trick that is.

Here they are in all their glory: https://www.schwalbetires.com/bike_t...es/durano_plus

The consensus here seems to always have the better tire on the front end, but I went the other way.

I recently rotated the tires on my bike because the rear one was showing too much wear, but not enough to be a concern in any way. The tightly spaced knobs in the center are nearly slick now and I figured I'd get a little more bite on those loose climbs by swapping in the front tire. I still have plenty of grip on pavement. I also don't have the bank to buy a new $50 tire every year (at least for the moment) and at the rythm they're wearing out, I think I'm good to go for another couple of years, if not more. Otherwise I think I would wear through it in less than one year's time.
When the time comes, I'll need to buy a new pair. I might try different tires anyway and I like mine to match.

Here's a pic of the "new" front tire shortly after rotating. It now probably has another 500-800km on it.

Thanks for the update.

I always enjoy hearing about other people's experiences as it helps me to form a picture in my head of what I should do when the time comes.

That picture makes me wonder if you could get away with riding with Marathon Mondials?

They will take you a lot longer than a year to wear out.

If they address my 2 concerns then they will be my go to tire from here on out.

1. Above average flat protection
2. Relatively easy to get back on after a flat

They are only slightly below the legendary flat protection of the Marathon Plus so I am hopeful that works out. They were on par with the folding Gatroskins as far as the ease of getting them on.

They are pretty expensive though. Retail on them is $60 each.

I know you're a big fan of the Marathons, Colonel, but I never felt attracted to this tire.

The MSOs should last me around 4 years in total. I've had them for 2 years now. I meant that the rear tire would probably last one more year from now had I not rotated them. Now I believe I'm good to go for another couple of years.

Based on how I ride, I look for something with more bite for those loose climbs. I don't think the Marathon Mondials would have enough grip.

I also looked them up just now to be sure and it's an 84$ tire, yikes! Also a bit on the heavier side. I know they have great puncture protection, but I only had one puncture with the MSOs in all of this time (I'm not counting the pinch flats from when I was experimenting with the pressure).

I don't know what's going to be my next tire, there are just so many great options today in this segment, but I'm pretty sure none of the Marathons will be on my short list.

Holy cow!~ 4 years? Wow I am lucky if I get 5 months out of tires. I do ride about 600 miles a month though.

I usually don't comply with this forum poll by ticking the boxes for easy tallying..

... But If you talk to anyone who has had a front tire failure, and resultant crash, you would know why

you put your best tire , new tire, on the front..

From my favourite German online retailer, you can get them for 22.61Euro each.

Now with this website, if you are not logged in and if you are not from a non-Euro country, you will see the price with 19% VAT added on, but the VAT free price available to people in the USA and other places is 22.61 Euro.

Now for Australia(and presumably the USA), they charge a flat delivery fee of 19.99Euro, but that applies if you order one item or you order 20 items, so my orders from them tend to be large, where I will stock up on items like brake pads and tubes and whatever else I want, whilst I am ordering tyres, so the delivery charge is spread out over many items.

Cool thanks. That puts the total at about $78 shipped for 2 which is about $12 less than what I paid for them shipped. I'll bookmark it for future ordering. I don't care if the shipping is slow as I'll order them well in advance of needing them.

They take around 10 to 14 days I find, to deliver to Australia.

Check out other items you may have previously wanted but couldn't find or thought they were too expensive, amortizing the cost of that postage is key.

Thanks again.. I was looking at the site and they do have good prices when converted to USD. Some items are marked as unable to ship to the US though. I was looking at a Kask helmet and it said it does not ship to US. Still thanks for the link and I've bookmarked it.

Is Kask owned by Sram by any chance?

With Sram deciding to limit sales of their products via online sites, there are now a few products that can't be shipped, that use to be fine to do so.

With helmets, it may be an issue of certification and not yet being officially approved by American regulators.

No clue.. You can buy Kask helmets here in the US. I've added a few items to my cart and will keep adding until I get ready to order.

Think I'll take your advise and stock up to mitigate the shipping cost.

Think I'll take your advise and stock up to mitigate the shipping cost.

The thing that really struck me about that website is not just the pricing, but the range of items they sell.

If you are after a new rack for example, the choices on offer are amazing, same with various tools or bags or saddles.
