FX3 and size...
 

So, I've been contemplating replacing my Roam 2 with either a Specialized Sirrus Sport, Giant Escape 1 Disc or Trek FX3 Disc. I've ridden the Escape and Sirrus, but the FX3's are all on backorder.

Now, here's the thing with size... We have two dealerships in town selling Trek bikes. I'm 6'4" and mostly legs make up the height more so than torso. One LBS says I need a 22.5. The other LBS is recommending the larger 25. Obviously, neither shop has this particular bike since it's not available yet from Trek, and neither has any type 25 bike. My Roam 2 is an XL size and I've never been on a 25 bike. If I decide to go with the FX3, I'll need to pay up front before they order, so whatever size I order ..I'm stuck with.

Which size seems right?

I have the FX3 in 25 and love it. My LBS ordered it for me with not commitment and when it arrived, they set it up for me including a raised neck on the bars. I knew I wanted it within 3 seconds of mounting it and the spin around the lot confirmed that the 25 was perfect. I had an old (classic?) Diamondback that was a 22.5 and while it was a great ride, a little tired, I thought I needed and deserved an new bike. I've only put a few hundred miles on it since taking ownership but it's been excellent.


I didn't get the disk model but I still feel like this bike size is perfect for me. I am 6'3" and mostly leg, like you, and this feels very good. You're welcome to come and ride mine if'n it'd be worth the trip to you, but I suspect you wouldn't...I'm a little surprised that you LBS would hold you liable for the purchase since they won't provide you with a test ride, but I guess that how some places do business. I appreciate the offer, but I believe you're around 200 miles from here. But if I was coming that way, I'd definitely take you up on it. Better yet, come do a little riding in Nashville! We have some great greenways and bike paths. :thumb:

I'm 5' 11 3/4" & riding a 22.5" FX 7.0 which is supposed to be too big for me but I feel like it fits me just fine. I doubt someone 6'4" would want the same size

I just received my new 2019 FX3 Disc in the 22.5 size and its perfect for my 6'0 frame.. It rides like a dream and the disc brakes are very effective and proportional .. Love this bike.

More leg, smaller frame, more torso, larger frame. There is a lot of room to raise and lower the seat but not as much adjustment in length. Also have to consider you arm length. You still want to ride one.

Do what I did at 6'3" tall. Get XL (22.5) and the longest stem they can put on that bike.

Yep -- I'm 6'0" also, with a 32" inseam, and I prefer medium frames. My Giant Roam is a large frame, but I'd probably buy it in medium if I did it again. Giant frames seem to be a bit longer than other brands, and my Large Roam has a 24.0" effective top tube, which is probably too long for me (and I've installed a shorter/higher stem on it to compensate). When I bought my Redline Zander, I bought a medium frame (17" nominal). Despite the short seat tube, it still has a longer effective top tube than my Roam! So I've installed a shorter stem on this bike also, and I just have a long seat post on it.

Total rider height and even inseam are generally not good indicators of bike fit. You really need to ride it.

The geometry chart shows little difference between XL and XXL; the 1.3cm (1/2") top tube difference is due to a a slacker seat tube angle. The only difference is a 3cm taller head tube (2-1/8") so if you like your bars high, go XXL. If you like a nimbler and lighter frame, get the XL.
