Rigid Mountain Bike Anyone

I miss my old Mongoose, those 80's steel bikes with fat tires. I would like a modern day bike without a front shock but with 2.0 tires. 9-10 speed with single chainring. I could do without disk brakes too.
Anything like that out there without building it up from scratch?

Steel would be best but I could live with aluminum.
Bike shop is best but would consider online.
I have bought many bikes online.

It's hard to find anything in 26" wheels today.

Check out the Raleigh Redux and Giant Toughroad series.

Check craigslist for any Surly or Salsa; there is quite active Surly & Salsa trading group on Facebook.

Troll is 26", Karate Monkey, Ogre are 29... Also you can grab a used Trek 7xx class for short $$ and upgrade to your liking. Plenty of steel frames around.
Check LBS for a place which rebuilds used bikes - once you find the frame you like, updating the rest is easy.

Thanks was already looking at Giant Tough road but the Talon series mt bike offers better specs for less, not the same but could work.
The Redux is more inline with what I want. Seems you pay for design not components.
Thanks again for the heads up.

I second the Redux recommendation. You might also look at the Dr. Dew:

KONA BIKES | ROAD | DEW | Dr Dew

There's also the Surly Troll that comes to mind as a steel-frame choice, but the price of the complete is over your budget.

Here is an example from FB Surly & Salsa:
...
Large Surly Ogre Single Speed 29er
$666
Minneapolis, MN
Large Surly Ogre Single Speed.
Custom stealth charcoal powder coat with decals. Single speed 36/19 ratio has been great for winter commuting.
Carbon Truvativ Noir Crankset with Truvativ 36t ring.
Bontrager duster single speed wheels, 2.25 bontrager front tire, WTB nano 2.1 rear. 19t surly cog and tuggnut.
TRP spyke brakes with 160 rotors.
750 Salsa Rustler 2 bars with dimension stem.
Planet bike 29er Fenders
Jandd rear rack.
Generic seatpost and Bontrager saddle. I have a Thomson straight I will toss in for asking price.

Great bike all around, I was riding it with double studded 29er tires and it handled the icy commute like a champion. Only selling because I purchased a Nature Boy that fits me better.

I always thought entry level MTBs were a deal. Once the fork dies, and it will, just swap out a rigid one.

For the price and what you get, the Pine Mountain seems like a good deal.

Another bike I find appealling is the Pescadro.
- I KNOW - it's 700c wheels - more road bike! (but this is the hybrid section....)
- but it's steel
- rim brake
- takes up to 40mm tire (or tyre)
If the $550 frameset price doesn't blow the budget, it might be worth a thought.

cheers!

The Jamis Dragonslayer is 520 steel and comes in 26+ and 27.5+. However, It is out of your budget and you'd have to swap the fork.

Personally, I'd just find an old 90s mountain bike and replace the drive train to your liking. Should come out much cheaper as well.

A little late (sorry), but if you are still looking for options, here's another:

https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/arx-2

This sort of bike appeals to me as well. One could buy this, replace the drivetrain to 1x10, and live with the stock wheels/brakes for a while.

You could probably find a used Karate Monkey, Ogre or Troll (all Surly) that fits your criteria. I built my Karate Monkey up from a frameset.

If you're interested in the Raleigh, look up their corporate discount program. It will cut the retail prices ~20-50%.

After all was said and done I bought the Redux 3 off eBay for $557. Hoping I'll be happy.
