Used Trek 720 Multitrack $300

I saw a used Trek 720 Multitrack for $300 that was tuned up by the shop selling it. Had some curved handlebars but they said they could put flat ones on. Gears seemed rusty, but I wasn't sure if that mattered.

I am a beginner level bicycler looking for something to ride on dirt walking trails and pothole filled paths with an upright stance that will fit in my car. Thinking a hybrid would allow me to trial out other types of riding in the future too.

Wondering if this bike would fit the bill and if it was a decent deal.

Seems way to high to me. The older multi tracks are great bikes, but I’d shop around if I were you. They’re asking way too much.

Those Multitracks weigh a ton, and are very difficult to get comfortable on due to long top tubes and terrible geometry. Not worth $300, IMO, maybe half that in good condition (no rusty gears). They will take a fairly wide tire though, but they suck on pavement.

These Multi Tracks are great bikes, but that sound sounds priced awfully high. You can often find them on Craigslist for $100 or under. I have a 750 model which admittedly has double-butted steel tubes, which will be lighter in weight, and it's about 27 pounds fully dressed, which is comparable with its aluminum contemporaries (like a Trek FX). The geometry on them is very comfortable, and they take standard 1" quill stems so you can customize the fit to your heart's desire. They have a lot of frame clearance for larger tires (I run 40mm tires on mine), so they're very comfortable on rougher surfaces. There's an extensive Multi Track thread on this website for lots of ideas of what you can do with them.

You won't be sorry for buying one, but $300 for one with rust is too high. Look elsewhere.

Here's mine, a '97 750 in 21" size.
