I Think I Found My Champion
So I did more shopping around today. I went all over one side of my whole metropolitan area, and I tried out a bike called the Yorkville, by Norco. I really like it. Upright, nice step through frame, had an interesting time getting on the first time cuz I am not a graceful woman.... but I could get it adjusted and the place has that lifetime service thing that I need cuz if I know anything it's extremely basic. Until I know more I can't really expect to jump off and fix up whatever. I do need to learn how to fix a flat though. That's as far as my maintenance will go for a bit. But yeah, I'm excited. I realize the Yorkville is aluminum, but for a beginner bike I'm going to use for commuting? What do the more experienced on here think?

Norco Yorkville
This looks like a decent bike -- it'll be easy to maintain and inexpensive to own. All the parts are basic components that should last a long time -- and are inexpensive to replace if they wear out. Pay attention to the handlebar grips, saddle, and pedals, and change them for something more comfortable if you don't like what comes stock.
Ride it and enjoy!

Thanks for your input, hokiefyd, I was worried at a lower price that maybe someone would come back and say 'hey, I used to have this bike.... used to.... for a reason' so your encouragement will go a long way towards my decision!
