Turnin2, good luck in the race. I love to see hybrids being pushed beyond the limited uses some folks believe them capable of. The guy who raced a crit on his and the guy who posted a picture of his bike fully loaded for touring also come to mind.

Another interesting feature is that the belt can not be taken apart for installation or removal, the frame must be opened. Note the bolted stays.

In that no one can agree on even using the term 'hybrid,' the definition of these bikes is expandable to include a broad range of bicycles. Some may say they should be capable of limited off-road uses on surfaces like gravel and hard-pack dirt. Other say this isn't so. Some say they should have 700C wheels, and others disagree.
I doubt an actual, concise definition will be in the offing anytime soon.

Trike is kinda cool but it's real place is in The Alt Bike Culture forum. Hybrid bicycles are a mix of different types of bikes, a trike is a mutant child of a bicycle and a go kart.

I saw a Trek Soho at a bike shop that is fairly new in the Rochester, NY area. Killer bike, with a neat idea (sure saves $$ on chain lube!) for those that dont think belts are good enough for bikes, Snowmobiles have been using them for many many years, and some put out 150+ HP these days.

I also have a 2008 Trek 7000 I use for overnight touring and rides with Mrs. Turnin2. We have some long routes that are part paved and part dirt track and that bike works really well for that.

I agree, the Hybrid class is really broad, basically, by it's own definition.
And, that bike, while an alternative, is really a cool trike; and quite unusual, even by trike standards.
And, that, my friends, is what hybrids are all about ---- changing and defining to make something out of many different things to suit your uses --- a Hybrid Trike!
Welcome to the forum, and I'm happy you shared --- and a few more detrails would be interesting!

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
This bike has travelled 5000 km and has been to Alaska and back since I last saw it... my friend's Marin Hamilton that has been converted from an ss/ fixed 29'r to an 8 speed equipped tourer.
This is where a hyb rid can take you...
If you ever get to Whitehorse you should stop by Phillipe's Bicycle shop... my friend says it is one of ther best shops he has ever been to.
Check the load on the bike too...

Wanderer, well said. I think you maybe responding in part to a post that I deleted after I decided it wasn't adding anything to the discussion, but your post says what I was trying to say. Thanks!
Sixty fiver, that's what I'm talking about.
Nice! A sub $500 single speed mountainbike converted to a long distance tourer, yeah!

qmsdc - The new (hand built) wheels on that Marin are worth about $700.00 (Cdn)... they are Mavic 719's laced with DT Swiss spokes to an Alfine 8 speed in the rear and a Deore hub in the front.
The sub $500 bike is worth about $1200.00 in it's present form which is not that bad when you consider it's a nicely made double butted steel frame with some very nice wheels and very good parts throughout.

I wasn't trying to say the bike was cheap. I'm impressed with the extent of this bike's transformation and the value added is a part of that.
Big props to the rider, the upgrades might be excessive if not put to good use.
It's not about the bike. It's the ride that caused me to respond to your post.

I suggested that my friend get the Alfine over the Nexus as they are more robust and worth the extra cost.
For the base price of 450.00 the Marin Hamilton is an excellent platform on which to build almost any kind of bike one wants and one local LBS has done a number of IGH conversions on them.

My friend has been very pleased with his Marin... they seem to make quite decent bike.

I wish I could have gone on this ride... I would have taken my modded out hybrid since I still don't have my green Miyata 1000 touring bicycle.
