Found this Schwinn Volare frame crying on the scrap pile. Nothing wrong with it so the shop owner told me I could have it. Opened my parts shed and this is how the build looks so far. It will be my winter bike. First short ride confirms a quick but steady comfortable feel.

Finished the build and already have miles on the Volare. Still getting use to the fastback style frame but the ride is so comfortable. Parts that came out of my bin work great together. Total cost...0 dollars.

Thanks! Now if I can only figure out how to build bikes for me to ride and have somebody pay me to do it!

What size tires are most of you using on your road/commuter bikes? 3SpeedSlow seem to have bigger size tires.

My Trek came w/ 700x38 on/off tires and I put 700x35 semi-slicks to use on my rollers.

Focus Mates CX before mods. I plan to put a SRAM GX Eagle 12 speed groupset on it once the bottom bracket arrives. It will get a flat riser handlebar and grip shifters too.

I will post pictures after the mods too:

Did anyone think you were a new rider for only going like 5 mph?

Or did everyone understand how smart you are?

With all the dark colours in Specialized's hybrid range these days, what a breath of fresh air, your bike is to look at.

That is a cool color. Sticks out just enough and keeps the cool factor.

That blue is gorgeous! It's so nice to see bright colored bikes.

Speaking of boring bike colors, here's my black Trek 7.3 FX. I've had this bike about 2.5 years now, and have put around 10k miles on it. I try to ride through the winter as much as I can, and light it up like a Christmas tree!
First photo is from today, the second is me and the winter lights. I'll have to make sure I get a picture this year of the lights without me in front lol

Thanks!!! When I saw this bike pop up on Facebook Marketplace in my size (shortie), I had to jump on it...

Every Sirrus I had seen up to now were either black, red, or silver...

I just wish it wasn't steel fork... i wouldn't mind knocking a pound or more off since i have to lift it over my shoulders to load into my truck...

And here she is out for the first spin. A bit different than my usual race road bike, but for commuting this will be great.

That's almost worth leaving the bike at home and going for a run.....

Almost.

That’s a great idea! I used to do that when I commuted to my work during the holiday season. I rolled a 1977 big green Free Spirit as my commuter with a strand off those little 2 foot Christmas trees. They came with battery packs so I would tie the light strand along the frame and tuck the pack under the seat. The truckers at our plant thought I looked like a UFO but they saw me!

Hah, that's perfect!

I got these lights on Amazon. $20 for the set, and the battery pack attaches to the spokes. The lights are in a plastic casing to protect them. They're surprisingly bright. Honestly, they make me feel a lot safer. Plus, people seem to be pretty surprised. I get a lot of compliments when I have them on

I've added a rack, panniers, and fenders since I first got the bike in May.

Finally have a picture I took of my modified Cyclocross bike. Just finished the maiden voyage.

I am thinking about a few other mods. Water bottle holder would be nice, some place to carry things.....

Looks pretty handy.

I take it that is a carbon fork you have?

What size is your cassette?

Right ColonelSanders the entire bike frame is carbon. I bought the bike to ride on the many trails and bike paths in and around Metro Atlanta. We also owned and operated a 12 acre dog park with trails. I have working dogs who need exercise so I exercised myself and the dogs with the bike on the relatively flat, in a creek valley, trails.

I am in the process of moving to the North, GA mountains. There is a network of narrow paved/gravel roads with tight turns and steep hills at my back door. I have a Mtn bike and the wife has one too. The Mtn bikes are geared lower and have less issues with the steep hills and tight turns. I wanted to be able to ride the lighter bike on the same roads.

There are steep drops offs on the sides of these roads, there are also black bear roaming the area. I wanted a bike that visiting family and friends could ride that could be easily exited. The gearing on the Cyclocross bike was too high to make it up hills, especially when I was riding with the wife on her Mtn bike. Thus I modified the Cyclocross bike to better fit my new conditions.

I wanted to try shorter cranks and grip shifting too. I put a Eagle GX 1 x 12 (32 X 10-50) speed group set on the Focus bike. The 1 x 11 (11-42) speed Mtn bikes get used at the low end of their cassets more often than may be advisable. My Mtn bike has a 32t CR, the wifes bike has a Race Face 30t CR. The 12 speed has an extra cog or two even on the steep hills more of the time.

So far I am very pleased. Being able to shift through several cogs quickly is helpful on tight turns, particularly when they are followed by steep hills. I think I am going to like the shorter 170mm cranks too. I am 5’7”- 5’8” tall with a short inseam. Still playing around with stems and handlebar height.
