Is this an Alt Bike?

1 Attachment(s)
Picked up a Schwinn Jaguar frame & fork 2 weeks ago. Bought a crap mountain bike for wheels & components. The low bars & skinny tires make this the fastest cruiser I've ridden. The seven speeds are a nice touch. This is a bike that works. Is this considered an Alt Bike or a project? Here's the results:

I agree.
Going to move it there.

Really!, the hybrid forum? What is an Alt bike then? A beach cruiser with mountain bike components does not make a hybrid

No, it makes it a Klunker, and darn nice one at that. :)

that bike looks cool!

what width tires are on there?

Saddle Up 09-09-09 09:49 AM

I get it. A late 1970's definition of a hybrid...

What definition of "Hybrid Bike" does make a hybrid, and meet the Official BF Label Masters' Seal of Approval?

To the OP, consider it any kind of bike you want and ignore the fussbudgets hung up on labels.

Thanks. This was a quick fun project that worked out better than I hoped. The tires are Forte City ST 26 x 1.5. Onsale last weekend at Peformance Bikes.

I refuse to believe I built a hybrid. Hybrids are for old men. I'm very immature for my age. (48) The Yaguar (it's name, hybrids don't have names, yuhknow.) is on craigslist. If it sells, fine, if not I'll ride it around town 'till it does.

I have nothing against hybrids. I do have a problem with middle-agedness on my part.:)

Sorry they moved your post. It's a hybrid if you want it to be, but it seems you don't. I wouldn't have seen your bike if it was still in Alt Bikes though. Maybe more people will see it here, but old men like me, not your intended audience. Looks like you didn't have to put a lot of time or money into it, but it came out nice!

Maybe we should work on changing the impression of Hybrids... ;)

I don't do alt-bikes, but I think their idea of what makes something "alt" is a little more extreme, and often involves actual welding/fabrication.

I always thought Hybrids bikes are bicycles that are neither road nor mtb. it's a mash up of bike design.

Couldn't agree more. Hybrid bikes are right at the top of the food chain right next to cyclocross bikes.

I've been wanting to make one myself. That site is great BTW.

My Gary Fisher Klunker has the same appearance. Its light and fast. A beach cruiser is a slow heavyweight. They may look the same but ride very differently. I'd recommend Schwalbe Fat Franks. They will make a difference in how the bike rolls!

Funny thing about hybrids: I buy & sell bikes to support my habit. Hybrids are always bought by college age kids who aren't avid riders, but need to ride for transport. My Schwinn Mirada project is more of a hybrid, ending up 700 X 38 rims & tires (up from the stock 650B) and 24 speeds.

If the world was a logical place, 95% of us would drive Corollas & ride hybrids. It isn't, and we don't.

I will ignore this and continue to terrorize all multispeed owners I encounter.:roflmao2:

NormanF 09-14-09 02:32 PM

Do you like a cafe racer? ;):)

Flying Merkel 09-15-09 09:33 PM

So this guy drives up in his Lexus SUV thing tonight. Took one look at the Yaguar & had to have it. Forgot to to test-ride it until I reminded him. Got my asking price too.

I miss it. Best barcycling bike ever.
