Specialized Crosstrail

A true hybrid? Specialized claims the Crosstrail is the only true hybrid bike on the market!

I have an '08, and absolutely love it. I have a lock out fork, standard on some models, and love it as well. I'm 63 years old, 6', 190#, and put 30 - 40 miles on it every day. It's been a real workhorse, and still likes to go fast.

The 09's changed design a little, but it's a great do it all bike.

I also changed the OEM 45mm wide tires to Schwalbe Marathon Supremes, 35 front, 40 rear, which is a very worthwhile change.

It's a great bike.

I'm curious about your Marathon Supremes -- how well do they work on hard packed gravel trails (or any other non-pavement terrain)?

Wanderer 10-13-09 08:59 PM

Besides paved surfaces, I use them on gravel roads, hard packed crushed limestone gravel, ag-lime, and dirt. Never a problem, but I don't climb mountains with them.

They are great tires.

Nice marketing scheme. They're selling a girl's mountain bike and calling it a hybrid? Interesting.

WOW They really changed the geometry on the 2010 model over the 2009 which I have.

And, even more from the '08's.

Given enough time, all those compact frames will get back to the Mixte's.... road bikes included.

The Crosstrail in your photo is not an 09.

dguest 10-14-09 10:44 AM

It sure is, It is the exact model I have and is direct photo from Specialized 2009 catalog. It was not taken from the archive site that is currently on the website but take directly from the site in Feb 2009 and save on my hard drive. Not sure why the photo on the archived site is different also mine is a 2009 Crosstrail elite which was introduced for the 2009 model year.

Got ya. I'm in Canada. We've had the Elite version since the start of the Crosstrail line (2007). The entire lineup was redesigned for 09 here.

Different frame sizes is why these bikes look different. If they have changed the geometry, it is not obvious from the pictures.

Saddle Up 10-14-09 04:13 PM

Maybe not quite so obvious from the photos but the 09/10 have more curve in the tubes particularly the tope tube.

qmsdc15 10-14-09 05:31 PM

Does that effect the geometry? I thought that was just styling.

By the way, what's up with the curved tubes? Don't straight tubes have better strength to weight ratio versus curved tubes with resultant stress risers?

Wanderer 10-14-09 06:15 PM

And the rear triangle is no longer stood up. It now leans forward. The top tube is definitely more sloped.

I have been in the market for a bike. Long story short I sat on a crosstrail and putted around the shop. This bike really felt comfortable even thought it was a little small for me. They had no XL frames in stock so I had them order a entry level and a elite. Can't wait till they come in so I can choose one! :thumb:
