Thinner Tires

Hi, I really don't know much about bikes. But I currently have a Trek 7.1 fx. The rims measure 622x16, stock tires are 700cx35. I was wondering what's the min tire width i can go with and whether or not I need a new inner tube also.

thanks in advance

have a read here and check out the chart on inner rim width vs tire size.

You should be able to put a 700 X 28C on the rims. And in my book - a 28C is the best size for a hybrid if you want to go fast on pavement - and still have a good hold on trails.

around here the back roads are maintained by spaying a layer of tar and then dumping truck loads of small sharp stones and letting the traffic compress the stones into the road. that kind of surface sets up a high frequency buzz on my steel puch with michelin city 28mm tires. i have kenda kwest hp 35mm on my steel bianchi hybrid and experience less buzz, but the 28 is a faster roll, no question. your choice on the comfort factor vs speed.

thanks for the responses. If I switch to thinner tires, would i be able to use the stock tubing?

I run two wheelsets on my Trek... Kenda 35 cross tyres for winter / spring riding and hitting the trails and Marathon 28's for summer / fall commuting / touring.

Really would like to build up a wheelset with some 700:51's for more extreme expedition touring and off road riding since I have the frame clearance for 2 inch 29'r tyres and bet these would be great for winter too.

The 700:35 tyyres offer a nice balance between speed, comfort, and all around capability.
