Fender Mounting Issue
 

Hi guys!

I have a 2007 model Trek 7.2 FX. I have a rack installed. I'm trying to install the rear Planet Bike Hardcore Super Flex model fenders. However I have 2 issues.

1. What/where is the chain stay bridge?

2. It appears that my rack is taking up the only rear mount at the bottom. What to do???

Some frames have no chainstay bridge, my cross bike doesn't, in which case you'll be using zipties to attach the end of the fender to the stays themselves, one around each stay and through the bolt hole on the fender, adjusting the tightness of each tie to center the fender.

You can use the same bolt at the dropout to mount both the fender and the rack.

rack and fender share bolts on some bikes. one of my bikes shares a bolt and the other has two mounting holes

both have chain stay bridges. one used a bolt the other used zip-ties.

fenders, it seems, is a little like plumbing. meaning: it helps if you are good with your hands and can improvise!

UPDATE: I got the fender mounted. I had to zip tie it down though till I can get some longer screws for the left side. THe right side will have to stay zip tied as there is only the one area to mount and its very close to the cogs.

You can get the right length bolt to install the two together, at almost any hardware store. Get a small handfull ov flat washers to adjust it to the exact length needed.

You will be glad you did, as the rack will be much more secure........

The chainstay bridge is the shirt horizontal connecting tube between the two chain-stays, just infront of the rear tyre.
Occasionally they have threaded horizontal holes and you can drill the fender and bolt them in from behind.
Normally you use a small metal clip over the bridge.
I prefer to use a small 3mm zip-tie. Drill a 3mm hole about 10mm from the tip of the fender, thread the zip tie through and wrap the end under the bottom of the fender. No rattle and it lasts for years.

The rack bolts can also serve as fender bolts. Put the rack next to the frame with the fender next and a washer. Use a stainless steel allen bolt that is long enough to fit right through and protrude a few threads. Grease the threads before assemly.
