Would a 7.3 FX be alright?
 

So at the end of the month I'm going camping with my girlfriend's family, and they told me that we're going biking, which turned out to be mountain biking. What I'm wondering, is a stock 7.3 FX going to be alright for that, or should I pick up some new wheels with some mountain tires?

Light hardpack trail riding with no roots, rocks or jumps should be okay for the bike as is. If you are doing something much more than that perhaps renting an mtb might be an idea. Getting new wheels with wider tires also includes a new cassette - and frame clearance.

no.. i wouldn't use that bike on anything besides pavement roads/trails. With the narrow fork in the front, i dont think you could even put a mountain bike tire on there.. I would rent another bike.

Mountain biking with the 7.3fx? I say you'd be insane to bring that thing into the mountains or forest unless there are bike paths.. Sure the tires are puncture resistant, but you'd be riding with a total lack of comfort and control. For mountain biking I'd bring no less than this :)

im glad i have an '09 kaitai with a decent front suspension and the ability to put on thicker tires. instead of renting an MTB a few times i could just get a spare set of wheels for the money or heck, just take the time to swap tires. not as great as a total hardcore mtb but i wouldn't be doing ridiculous mtb trails anyways.

Consider getting cyclocross tires.

I was gonna ask if there was some kind of tire that would give me some better stability in the dirt. Like I've seen some tires that look like they'd fit my bike, and have some tread to them. I'm not at home right now and I don't know my tire size off hand, but I'm going to look into some different tires once I get home. I might just borrow the catalogue from work cause I have to order a decent amount of other stuff too. What's the largest tire size I can fit onto my bike?

700x35 is a common cyclocross dimension—I can't imagine why that wouldn't fit.

actually, I think I know exactly what tire you're talking about. I looks basically like a mini atb tire with a finer tread. I can't remember what bonteronger calls it, but I packed plenty of them today at the warehouse
