Older Hybrids

Hi all, new to the hybrid forum as I'm usually over on the C/V forum, but found you guys here and thought I'd say hi.
I was wondering since I'm a crusty ol' steel guy. Do you guys ride any of the of the older steel hybrids? I did see some here and there but thought it would be cool to see some of the older hybrids in one place.
I'll start off with my hybrid. A '90 Miyata TripleCross. I bought her off of craigslist for $40 with the intent of flipping her, but after a little wrenching and cleaning and few test rides I had second thoughts. She's staying, lol. I love this bike such a blast to run errands on or take down the local MUP. I've made a few additions to her with some more to come. Any way here she is, and please add your pics.

I had a 1994 Giant Nutra which I traded in last year for a 2009 Giant Cypress DX. I probably should have just spent the $400 on upgrading the Nutra. It had a decent CroMoly frame and fork, and good geometry.

Also, we have a "post pictures of your hybrid" string on here - please post your pictures over there, as well.

Remember, eventually, all of them will be "OLD," just like the rest of us.

They just did this on C&V. But what the heck... I'll play

1994 Nishiki Sport XRS, bought as NOS for $100 in late 2008.

Recently added dynohub lighting; love it.

(My Nishiki above had those cranks originally; Shimano fixed them in '09. My LBS just replaced a broken crank under this recall last month; Shimano still honors it.)

My hybrid is an old steel trekking bike converted to drop bars:

I bought it used just over a month ago and I know nothing about the model or year of production. It gets me where I want to go, the way I want to, and I like it very much.

That looks dangerously speedy & CX! A lot of fun I suppose...

This is my wife, JoLynn's current "commuter bike", it's a 1997 Mongoose Crossway 450, all cro-mo steel frame and fork.

It's been a great bike for her and has had hardly any mech. problems since we've owned it

Both of my hybrids are steel. 1990 Trek 750 with TT lugged steel, and a 1993 Specialized Crossroads. The 750 was a framset build and the Crossroads I upgraded to 9 speed w/ XT and LX components.

Very fun indeed. I will be getting some slicker tires for the next season, so it won't look so much CX, but will be even more speedy. I do like the overall look with the knobbies though, but I don't think I really need them for the kind of off road riding I usually do.

1991 Schwinn CrossCut ... https://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1...0/1991_15.html https://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1...0/1991_18.html

Great all around, multi-purpose bike!

I have never regretted the huge financial investment I have made in this bike...purchased used about 10 years ago at a tag sale for big bucks! .

I have added a few things over the years, but it is still the same basic ride.

Are those standard drop bar brake levers over linear-pull brakes on the Trek?
I was starting to think I'm weird for having no problems with that setup.

Yes they are standard drop bar brakes (Cane Creek SCR-5C), and the brakes are Tektro RX5 Mini-V. Great brakes. Guess a lot of guys run them on their cross bikes. Also pretty cheap. I got mine for like $30 from BikeSomeWhere.com.

1993 Trek 700 Multi-Track

Replaced the derailleurs and canti brakes with Shimano STX. Also upgraded to better quality Shimano Q.R. skewers. Brand new 700 x 37 WTB Slickasaurus tires. Replaced the grip shifter for the front derailleur with a friction shifter, which makes it easier to accurately adjust the FD position. Have since upgraded to alloy MTB pedals.

Nice to see all the love for Multitracks. Here's mine in a couple forms. I find it a very nice riding frame, no matter how I set it up.

I use Kenda 700 x 35 on my Raleigh hybrid. They aren't on Kenda's website, and I don't remember any model name, but they seem to work just fine. If it matters I am a bit smaller than you at 5'11" 195 lbs.

I have a Nishiki Supersport(?) from around 1992. I use it as my dedicated winter bike (studded tyres permanently on, platform pedals, friction shifters, dynohub).

Recent update of the bike in post #6 above. I got a Brooks B17 for Christmas and did a drop bar conversion.

tOld hybrids are great, love seeing the other Trek Multitracks being used! Here's my '90 Trek 750 Multitrack (TT lugged steel) converted to drop bars with bar-end shifters and Shimano 8sp, in winter and D2R2/Honey One Hundred/F2G2 configurations. I used to run Schwalbe Marathon 700X47s before the Clement X'Plor USH 700X40mm. Lots of tire & fender clearance in those old hyrids!

Blue Collar Bianchi

I've outfitted a few '90's cross bikes with new parts to accommodate a tall rider (me) with a moderate lean. My latest is a '91 Bianchi cross bike with the unfortunate name, Boardwalk. It's one's of my favorites, having a 23" frame, whereas most are limited to 22". This one got a new seat, seatpost, stem, bars, shifters, cables, tires, and pedals. The white paint offered a new theme to riff.

Cross Thread

I learned about Specialized Crossroads on these forums and turned to CL to find them. Within 6 months, I had three of them, of different vintage, from the early to late 90's. Too bad the largest size is limited to 22", but I make-do with riser handlebars. Each is different animal depending on the tires I install. The Kenda Hybrid Nimbus and Hybrid Knobby are excellent and inexpensive. These bikes have a light, buttery ride, handle a variety of terrain, and are cheap to boot. Later, I found a Miyata TripleCross with Bontrager H2 tires. I added a fancy new seat stem, a tall quill stem, sprung seat, riser handlebars, and bam!
