I've thought about it. There was a '93 Corrado on my local CL a couple of months back. It was just like the one I had but with a 16" frame. Had it been an 18" or 20" I would have given it serious consideration. Right now though, I'm neck deep in bike projects.

A friend of mine has an 18" GT something-or-another with an aluminum frame and front shock. Someone he worked with gave it to him. I may hint around to him that I'm interested in it if he wants to part with it.

One of my pet projects has been to find a largest size early 90's Specialized Stumpjumper/Rockhopper frameset and build it up as a 26" wheel hybrid. These are the size I would want:

95 Specialized Hardrock Sport GX i just bought off of CL. Seems they bought it but never used it! Put on some new 26 X 1.5 tires, Profile Design bar ends, cheap computer, cheap rear light, etc so far... Super light, smooth ride!

My two rigid, 90s mountain bikes that I use for general-purpose riding. One is steel and one is aluminium.



From left to right they are 1994 custom spec Breezer Lightning and a mostly stock 1995 Cannondale M500.

The Breezer was my main ride until about 2000 ish. It went through three wheelsets, three cranksets, a seatpost, a rear derailleur, numerous saddles, a pair of shifters, and two sets of pedals by then - not counting the standard wear parts. Ever since I stopped hardcore offroading on it, the components have held up quite well. Around 2000 I replaced all the worn parts so its in great functional shape. I do think the King headset has finally died after 20 years of use <-- best headset ever. It has a 17" Ritchey WCS steel tubed frame with a custom threadless Bontrager (pre-Trek) triple-clamp rigid fork and fairly high end parts (King headset+hubs, XTR derailleurs, cassette, and chainrings, XT thumbshifters, brakes and BB, Raceface cranks). The white part of the paint job used to be glittery. It doesnt glitter anymore

The Cannondale is a relatively recent purchase. My first adult bike was a Cannondale SM400 in 1990 so I wanted to relive that. Its an 18" 2.8 frame with an all-aluminium threadless Pepperoni fork. Its got mostly mid-level components (STX and Alivio) including the stock wheelset. I did upgrade the BB to a BB-UN72 which I had laying around and the shifters to Suntour thumbshifters. Im running slightly fatter (2.0) tires and a crabon bar to counter the "OMG aluminium is stiff" - so far so good. It has green glitter paint all over, which still sparkles

They're both in mostly stock MTB trim, which is great for all-round riding on hilly terrain. The Cannondale is a size larger and has a higher stem than I would use for pure off-roading. Tires are big and has short knobs for a off-road bias but still don't squirm too much on pavement. It also retains the stock cantilever brakes instead of more off-road capable v-brakes. Currently it has a double chainring setup. That is the extent of my "hybridization."

Wow, that looks nice. You've had that since brand new? That's amazing, there are many new parts, but those are original 737 SPDs. My 747s looked like hamburger after 5 years; the oldest bike I've had since new is a 93 and it is also showing much beausage.

Thanks.The frame is virtually mint as the bike sat in storage in my basement for almost 20 years and prior to that it was lightly ridden. Work, family and life in general pre-empted this resurrection. The new parts thrown on the bike include Shorty cantilevers, threadless stem adapter, chain, saddle, bar grips, Specialized Nimbus 26 x 1.5 tires and shifter/brake cable and housing.

The original Shimano Biopace crankset was a bit beat up but I found great deals on a used XT crank on Fleabay as well as a Thompson seatpost and brake/shift levers. The SPD pedals are almost as old as the bike but there was no play in the axles. They just needed a good cleaning and some fresh grease in the bearing units. I acquired the stem and handlebar on Pinkbike for $50. They were lightly used and in awesome condition. I find it hard to fathom how little bike owners sell their practically new parts on Pinkbike for just to upgrade their stock bikes. The used 3 x 7 Deore XT brake/shifter lever set was a bit chipped up but were direct replacements for the stock thumbshifters. Rims, hubs as well as derailleurs were left untouched.

I have this same bike, including the same color and type bottle cage. I bought it used a couple years ago. I love it, but having a devil of a time with the brakes. what brake pads are you using with these narrow rims?

Setup is key to cantis. For starters, your straddle rods are too high. Lower them for more power; BITD we ran them 1/4" off the tire, now I go to the crown height of the fork. For pads I've been using Kool Stops since 1990.
