No Bar Ends for Trek 7.6FX ???

My LBS says there's no way to add bar ends to my new Trek 7.6FX without replacing the bar and grips. I find that hard to believe. Can anyone recommend bar ends that don't require a new bar and grips?

The 7.3 FX and up has the IsoZone handlebars which are tapered at the ends, ergo no bar ends... for now. Google-fu yeilds a mirro setup that is compatable with the bars, so maybe some day someone will make compatable bar ends. My summer project is to create an adapter of some sor so i can put some bar ends or drop bars on my 7.3

A bit silly of Trek to make a handlebar with grips that isn't compatible with standard barends.

Barends on riser bars are considered a fashion faux pas by those in the know. Perhaps Trek is trying to prevent you from embarrassing yourself.

The 2011 Trek 7.3 FX has straight handlebars, not riser handlebars. And Yes, I agree that TREK goofed on this. Did you check with any other LBS's to see if they can suggest bar ends that will work for your bike without changing the grips?

I have Ergon GC3's on my bike and they're awesome. However, Ergon's have the grips and bar ends integrated, so you would be replacing the grips on your bike to get the bar ends.

Ciao

Agreed, but my Felt came with the same ergo grips. First thing I do is break out the carpet knife and cut them away, then wrap the bars in road tape. Double layer, double comfort.

Thanks to everyone for your quick responses. Sadly, it seems like I'll need to replace the handlebars and grips to get those bar ends. I especially like the approach used by jimbojonez. Also, I really enjoyed browsing his web site-- excellent and very informative!

If you're considering jimbojonez' approach of GP1s plus barends, I second the above suggestion for Ergon's GP3s. Same grip as the GP1, but with integrated barend. Very comfy!

Thanks, glad someone got something out of it

I went with separate bar ends and grips over the Ergon G3 setup because i wanted some flexibility with changing bar ends and grips out in the future if i wanted. And i like the versatility and length of the separate bar ends.

Here are some photos.
