I,m looking to replace my 25 yr old Trek mountain bike with either a Hybrid or Cycle Cross bike. What size bike should I look for? I am 6 ft tall with 32 inseam. I don't want to spend over $1,400. I will be using the bike to commute back and forth to work and on bike trails on the weekends. From the reviews I have read, I'm torn between Specialized Sirrus Comp, Giant Rapid 0 & Cannondale Quick 3. I have not test driven any yet. Just looking for drivers opinions before test driving. If that's your pants size and not your true inseam. maybe a 20.5" hybrid. Larger if you want to sit up straight, smaller if you are fit and want a more aggressive position. Test ride some bikes and decide for yourself. If you can't stand over the top tube, it's too big. If you can't raise the saddle high enough to ride with only a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke, it's too small.

You can find a good fit on a (limited) range of frame sizes. Some riders prefer frames that are on the big end of that range. I tend to buy bikes on the small side.

I haven't bought a drop bar bike in 30 years. Maybe someone else can comment on sizing a cyclocross bike. I believe an inch or so larger than what you'd like in a flat bar bike is about right, but I'm not sure.

The reach on a CX is a tad longer since it usually got brifters. With drops you´ll also get multiple hand positions and more aero dynamic riding position. So, with that in mind you should compare over all comfort, riding ambitions and favoured usage. Bikes today tend to be stretched rather than different heights (sloped and compact frames) which should be taken in consideration.

I'm 6' with an inseam just under 31 inches meaning I have short legs for my height. My cyclocross bike is a 54cm and is pretty much spot on. You are probably looking at the 54 to 58 cm range with a 56 cm as a starting point. The fit can be fine tuned with stem length and handlebar height. I list a large range because frame geometries can really vary quite a bit. As far as a hybrid I think 20 to 22 inches is about right (hybrids and mountain bikes usually measured in inches).

I am 5 11, and wear 32 inseam pants. I have a Kona Jake (cx bike) size 54 cm, a Felt X City (hybrid) size 55 cm, and had a Trek 7.3 FX (hybrid) size 22.5 inch. These all fit me well, though as someone mentioned above, the cx bike stretches me a bit more due to the handlebar shape, depending where I put my hands on the bars. They all have a top tube within an inch of each other, IIRC.

I have a 21 inch Jamis Citizen 3 Hybrid,( I am 5'11) very nice and quality bike and components, great for commuting
