Hello, this is my first time buying a bike that is not from a department store, so looking for some advice. Trek 7100 and Giant Cypress are the two bikes that my friend recommended that are in my price range.

This bike is just from getting to and from school which is about 2.5 km each way and around town, along with maybe some longer trips.

Which bike would you recommend and what are the pros and cons.

Also if there is another bike in this price range that you think would be better, please share.

Welcome to the forum............honestly either one of those bikes would be an excellent choice!! They are both very comperable and have solid components, from the shifters, to the tires etc. If it were 'me' I would buy the one that had the nicest dealer/sales support. As you get into riding, it is important to have a good relationship with the place you buy from - they will help with the initial tune-up (after you ride for a hundred miles or so, things will need to be tightened/adjusted etc.) and a dealer is really important. Take each one for a test ride - shift the gears and go with the one that calls out to you. You can't make a 'wrong' decision with either bike - they will both serve you well!! Good luck with your decision, and remember there will be some additional things you may want to purchase down the rode like a lock, rack, basket, speedometer etc. Again - both are solid well built bikes! My wife and I have Treks (she has a 7100 and I have a 7200 - we ride a lot.........and have no regrets - my decision was also between the Cypress model and Trek, but the Trek dealer is GREAT - and the Giant dealer has an attitude ---------- Trek won in our case).

I'm an older newbie who just rides around the neighborhood a little, but these are the two bikes I considered, in the women's versions. I had decided on the Cypress ST, but neither of the two Giant shops that were within reasonable distance ever got one in in my size (XS), and honestly weren't all that friendly. I visited a Trek shop and they were so much more welcoming and helpful, and they had a 7100 in my size on the floor. I went back a couple of days later and bought it along with a pump, helmet, odometer, and some chain lube. They included some good service perks with my bike purchase.

As a short newbie who hadn't ridden in decades, and not much then, both of these bikes seemed tall to me at first, but I am really enjoying my Trek 7100! It's a very comfortable bike on my admittedly very short rides, and seems to want to go faster than I'm inclined to go. LOL From the forums I visited and zillions of questions I asked, these are both good entry level bikes. Don't make any generalizations from my bike shop experiences as to which are the better dealers--just depends on the people in each shop. Ride both bikes if you can, and get the one you like best. If you like both, go with the shop that's more helpful. Good luck with your decision and purchase! Let us know how it goes.

I'm just getting back into biking again. I bought the Trek 7100 about a week ago. I've been putting 5 - 15 miles per day on it since I bought it and love it so far.

I have a Giant Cypress and really like the bike and would most definitely buy another one if something happened to this one. The Trek is also a very good bike. I won't steer you toward one bike or another just because I own one of models that you are considering. My advise is to ride both of them and see which one feels best to you. As mentioned, a good relationship with the dealer is always something that you must consider. If you are going to have issues with the dealer every time you go there, then go elsewhere for the product. There is also a WOW factor that may hit you when you test ride the bikes and if that happens, than that is the one to get, even if you have to go to another dealer for it. Whatever bike you decide upon, get out and ride and enjoy every minute of it.
