Question Hybrids on Trainers

My sister has a hybrid bicycle and is wanting to ride it on a trainer this winter. I've heard that if she leaves her original tire on it on the trainer, it will wear down the tread. What does she need to do to ride her bike on a trainer? Does she need another tire or an entirely different tire and rim or what? How much of a hassle is this?
