Bike Build
Hello everyone,
My name is Al I used to ride BMX. Ever since I had my accident and got rid of my bike i've been wanting to ride again. However since im growing older I can either get a BMX bike to ride or get another bike to commute. My friend found this Huffy in the dump and gave it to me. I posted it on the Hybrid section because I want to make it kind of like a BMX but add disk brakes. I'm also thinking of adding mountain forks with full suspension. I should've taken pictures with my camera instead of my phone but this is it so far. Since I dont do bmx myself, I suggest you build it up to be a good looking utlity bike - why not make it a bit performance or touring style? great colour!

Ugh, this is going to be a long thread perhaps. If the frame geometry is not made for suspension forks, I doubt somewhat that you can add suspension forks, though I may be wrong if it's a 700c bike.
The frame also needs braze-ons for disk brakes and the hubs need to be made for disk brakes. That being said, if you wanted V-brakes for larger tires and you want to keep the drop bars, you'd need V-brakes made for road brake levers or brifters as they say. Some people are satisfied with Shimano 2200 or 2300 road brifters but others say they prefer Microshift. Although you may not be able to get Microshift brifters in 8 speed at this point, not sure. For this kind of project, I suspect the biggest tires you can put on may be 700x42 tires. But, you may want to check if you have 27 inch wheels. Some older bikes have them which makes it a bit harder to find tires for them. Also, to save money I'd go ahead with a flatbars (or riser bars with a slight rise if you will), V-brake levers and rapidfire shifters. Now, if you want to go off-road with this, you may want to consider a 44T-32-22 crankset or 42T-34-24. Let me figure out some stuff and I'll edit the post as I go along. With the cheaper wheels, that's over $374 but some would argue the more expensive wheels would be much more worth it. I'm assuming your frame would take a 130mm rear wheel but if it's older, it may be 126mm. ANOTHER EDIT: I almost forgot, you could also choose Falcon friction shifters and go cheaper on the derailleur if that's the case like Acera rear derailleur and Altus front derailleur. And if you can't use V-brakes, you may not be able to put on 42mm tires. Oh well, congratulations you're screwed. Just kidding but maybe a flatbar conversion may still be cheap enough. You might be able to use 700x35 tires and if you get cheap V-brake levers to go with your brakes, you might be alright or maybe V-brakes that go with V-brake levers. (The cable pull is different for V-brake and cantilever.) You could always try to re-grease and re-adjust everything and you'd still have an OK bike, especially if you replace the cable housings and cables. |
He can't use v brakes because there are no canti studs.

Your goal and reality are far apart.
To create what you want is going to cost a fortune in parts and welding costs etc. I think you'd be better off picking up an MTB frame cheap from somewhere, and starting the build. With the MTB frame you'll have many more options whilst building. |
Thanks guys. I still have parts from my BMX bikes so I'm going to try to integrate those in. I definitely don't want a fixed gear many cousins of mine have them and I'm not to fond of them, Nice bikes though.

If nothing else, it will be interesting to see what you come up with. As others have pointed out, without expensive mods to the frame, discs or V-brakes are out. Also remember that, being a Huffy, the frame is probably made of cheaper high tensile tubing, so it may not be able to take the kind of use you plan to put it to. I only remind you of that to keep it in mind as you spend on parts. Good luck on it.
